NetApplications, a Web measurement company said on Wednesday that the release of Mozilla 1.5 in November has brought a shot of energy to the browser, which has seen its average share rise to 8.8%, up from 8.6% in October.

A similar 0.2 growth was experienced by Apple’s safari, which is a web browser built on the open-source Konqueror browser.

“If Firefox 1.5 had rolled out earlier in the month, its numbers would be even rosier,” said Vince Vizzaccaro, vice president of marketing at NetApplications.

“What’s interesting is that in the last week of November, Firefox hit as high as 9.09 percent market share, which is indicative of its potential to hit a critical mass of 10 percent,” said Vizzaccaro in a statement.

According to the NetApplications’ count, IE fell from 86.5 percent of all browsers used in October to 86.1 percent in November.

Firefox really is an awful excuse for a browser, and will never really catch on outside of geek circles :). Try Opera if you want a serious alternative to IE.

Honestly don't see how people can still insist on using IE - my experience with that browser is nothing short of atrocious. Every time I use it for compatibility tests, I am half-tempted to run a spyware scan to get rid of all the stuff that must have gotten through while I was using IE.

Only problem I see with FF's growing market share is that it has become a bigger target for pop-up developers and coders. About a year ago, practically no pop-up could get past FF's built-in blocker, but not anymore.

FireFox is considerably more secure than IE (in fact, US Department of Homeland Security once issues a statement advising PC users to switch to Firefox due to IE's numerous security faults). In addition to that, FireFox supports tabbed browsing (meaning that you can open a multitude of websites within in the same FireFox window, as opposed to having 15 FireFox windows cluttering up the bottom of your screen). FireFox also features a number of excellent user-made plug-ins, such as Reload (automatically reloads a page every so many seconds).

I never used Opera, so I wouldn't know how big the difference is. Back when Opera was a commercial browser, FireFox had the advantage of being free; now that Opera is free, however, I'm not sure how big a different there is. Perhaps someone more experienced with FireFox can elaborate.

Besides, all things considered, don't forget the warm and fuzzy feeling of joining the ranks of users promoting open-source software and helping weaken Microsoft's stranglehold on the market. That alone is as good a reason to use FireFox over IE as any! :D

Sincerely,
George
