First Domain Purchase?

Hi All,

I have been trawling these forums for several days and have found some conflicting opinions on what the best type of domain is best to buy first.

Purchasing a .com first is a general consensus due to its easy resell-ability. But my question is; what do I purchase first?

Do I hand-register a simple .com in a niche? A brandable?
Do I try and somehow find a cheap 4-letter domain on GoDaddy or maybe Sedo?

Hopefully this thread can shed some light for the newbies on here, just like me.

Thanks,
Matt.

Look at the marketplace on this forum, it's one of the best places where you can find valuable domains at decent prices.
Focus on .com at the beginning, and try to not invest much money.
I would avoid hand-regs because it's really hard finding any domain with real value not registered yet. It is possible although, but require some skills you need to develop with experience.

Do Expired Domains count as hand-reg? I found a couple on expireddomains.net

Within the first-steps period into domaining business, i would suggest you to not look at expired lists.
It's a very competitive part of the business, and all the most valuable expiring/dropping domain names have been privately auctioned by backorder services (such as NameJet, Snapnames, Pool etc. ).
Hundreds and hundreds of people check expired lists everyday, and it's become quite rare to see a valuable domain being available for registration again.

On the other hand, with GoDaddy you'd spend $2 per domain if .com , so you can always try to register them, if they're already available for registration.
But i suggest you to not address your efforts to the expired domains, for now.
