Firefox better than IE??

Hi
I had an argument with my senior who is not willing to believe that Firefox is better than IE. I told him that firefox is world's most popular and widely used browser. Is this true?
Can anyone provide me the link where I can see the % usage of browsers in the world, preferably on some authentic website?
Thanks

:imho: world's most popular is ie of course it's wed lock to microsoft os but in terms of usability and security i go for firefox, which have i think more than 100 million users, you can see their stats at http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ for firefox.

No, right now, I believe worlds most used browser is IE.

I can not provide any link but firefox still have to grab much bigger share to overcome IE share.

My 2 cents,

Well you lied :( lol. I have had to argue this MANY times with people at school and within the family.

Just say something to scare them into using it; it'll work... "Firefox doesn't throw your computer into hackers' laps" or something.

EDIT, QUOTE:

Over 10%* market share worldwide for Firefox, achieved in just over a year.

*Update (2/14): I should have noted straight up that this 10% market share number is just my personal estimate. This isn't an official Mozilla number. There are many third party browser share studies out there that put Firefox share worldwide below or above 10%. The bigger point remains -- we've gone from 0% to somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% share, and that's a damn good thing.

** Nearing 150,000,000 downloads. At 147,000,000 now.

That's taken from www.spreadfirefox.com

A bit old but ... still works ;)

It's fair to say that Firefox has roughly 10% worldwide market share, different sources say it's either 1% higher or lower. Remember that more usage doesn't mean the product is better, IE comes default on every windows computer that's why more people use it. Also, IE has apparently has 85% market share at the moment.

The best way to convert someone to Firefox is to show them what it can do, don't try to just tell them that it's better. Show your senior the "Find as you type" search feature, the live bookmarks, the Adblock extension, the tabbing features, customizability features, bookmark manager, different themes, all the extensions, etc.

Don't try to convince him by using market share as an example, it means nothing.

Here's a list of what IE6 doesn't have, from the MS blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2004/08/24/219885.aspx

Ask your senior the last time he had a virus or spyware/adware problem, if he's never had any, ask him how much money he's spent on anti-Virus software.

He's right.

Just tell him that it's cool to hate Microsoft and support Firefox, that's how it gets most of its users anyway

FF is not the most used browser. IE still is. But FF is used by most experts and computer fans. FF's unbeatable advantage is that it's virus proof.

IE is still the king, no doubt. Firefox gets about 10% as others have said, with tech sites such as digg, slashdot, etc getting a lot more FF love. I use both. Firefox has some great extensions, and the seaches box is really handy and extendable. But, if you're designing websites, it has to look good and work right in IE.

That is so wrong... I don't know why so many people choose to believe that.

Anyways, I like using Opera. I used to be against it but then I actually gave it a real try and I was attatched to it.

If you've really done your research you would know that Opera is better. The only thing that I don't like about Opera is that with a select few sites it doesn't work correctly. When that happens I use FF or IE whichever.

I know some of you are going to disagree with me about Opera but at least do your research before you tell me I'm wrong. A lot of what everyone says about FF is just passed around the internet like rumors in a school yard.

Best Regards,
Ben Oldenburg

A lot of people don't know about Firefox or they are afraid of changing to it. Personnally, until an alternative comes out that is better than firefox, I will never switch to IE or Opera or any other browser. Firefox is just so clean and never crashes on me. Remember, quality over quantity.

Yea, IE is definately more used, and FireFox runs smoother, but after going through many troubles, I realized that firefox is just messed up. Things don't work there that work on IE, and tables are screwed up sometimes, and there are just problems in general when making a website and previewing it with firefox.
