3)proxy/anonymous surfing

I just hate we can not add a google and / or alexa toolbar to firefox, other than that it is great!

Um, have you seen the googlebar for mozilla/firefox?

You can even grab PR now using this extension

Sometimes you want to see selected Flash animations but you don't want to be hit over the head with Flash ads and other abuses.

That's why you can install flash, and then install the flash blocker for mozilla/firefox and you get little icon placeholders that you can click if you want it to start playing. This is incredibly handy!

I used Netscape 4.7 till the web didn't like it anymore and was *forced* to use IE.

Now there's Firefox!!!

By the way, Mozilla/FireFox helps keep your privacy alot easier than IE - stop showing where you are coming from (which can have usernames, etc in the URL) by turning off referers:

enter about:config (no spaces) into address bar
filter for referer
change network.http.sendRefererHeader value to 0 (zero)

Also for some sites that try to force certain browsers or you wanna see how they change their content for IE vs Mozilla try out this handy extension:
User Agent Switcher for Mozilla/FireFox

Great tip, aww. I'd like it even better if I could figure out how to implement it! D-:

After clicking the about:config command in the address bar, what do you mean by the next instruction, "filter for referer"? I can't find anything about filters or referers in the Firefox help menu. :'(

Tom, type about:config into the address bar. :) (weird .. it puts a space into it, it's about:config without a space between : and config).

Thanks, Scott. I figured out the space problem in the config command earlier. After clicking the command in the address bar, what happens next with the list that appears?

==> Never mind, now I found it. D'OH (slaps forehead). I've never seen the "filter" bar in Mozilla before! Got it.

Heh. Now that we're at the bar, order us both another one. This one's on me.

Ah sorry about the space issue with "about:config" I did not realize the board was adding a space in there, wierdness!

0.91 installed over 0.9 with no problems. That's a very nice improvement over earlier versions.

No problem with the added space, aww. I figured it out with only minor frustration. D-:

Well there was a serious change in the config system from 0.8 to 0.9 but from what I have read it should stay the same to 1.0 (hopefully).

Yep, upgrading from 0.8 to .9 was a real pain.

FireFox users, you need to upgrade to 0.9.2 as soon as possible as there is a shell access security hole that needs to be patched:
http://www.eweek.com/print_article/0,1761,a=131090,00.asp
links in a Web page using the "shell:" scheme can execute arbitrary programs on the user's system. The attacker would have to know the location in the file system of the program, but there are known programs in Windows with buffer overflows.

This means the attacker could create a link in a Web page that could execute arbitrary code under Windows. Through the use of an appropriate META tag, the attack could load without the user having to click a link explicitly.

In the definition of a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier), the technical name for a Web address, "shell:" is not a protocol like http but a scheme. Some schemes map directly to protocol handlers in the browser itself or externally, such as those that handle audio and video media.
