What do you mean transfer files? Do you mean like just copying the contents of a drive from one to the other or just simply moving a file? If they are on the same network you should be able to move the files no problem at all as long as the drives they are on have been selected to "share".

I just want to transfer files from the two laptops.. back and forth any time i need to.

Should i set up a home network through the router? can that be done using win XP?

I'm pretty sure you could just go to properties ----> sharing then share the foler, then go to run: //COMPNAME and copy the contents of that folder as long as they are both on the same network.

Control panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Setup Wizard

Follow the wizard, it's not hard to setup network for two winxp machines.

He is running XP. All he needs to do is go to START --> NETWORK --> Set up a home/office network or Add A Network Connection. Do it for both computers and you will be golden.

When you set XP up did you create an admin and user accounts? If so you will need to probably log in as the admin to set up the network.
