This company is sending me a promo via DM. They state that they have partnered with @NamePros for this.

Not appreciated.
Apologies. We believe it's a solid offer for a limited number of valuable members like yourself.

Simply reply "not interested" or Mute the conversation to not be bothered again.

We appreciate your feedback.

Are we really going down the path of sponsored DM promotion?

Did you really think this wouldn't backfire horribly?

Only if we believe the offer is genuinely valuable to members. In this case, it can save them money. In the past, when we partnered with Verisign, it was a gift card. And so on.

Almost weekly, we receive messages from members asking for discounts.

We understand not everyone is interested, but some members genuinely want this kind of offer, and it's a win-win to help make it possible.

The cost is a single unwanted message for some. A small deed to help your fellow domainers who will benefit from it.

We're open to feedback.

My DM is open for DM, not ads.

There is a place for sponsored content, but it is not in DM.

I disliked that you called me a liar. I did not dislike you.

There's a difference:

Furthermore, all of my posts are 100% true to the best of my knowledge.

I haven't used the word liar?

I said that you're not open to suggestions, because you're still defending this.

Please read carefully. Thank you.

AI Overview

The adage โ€œall publicity is good publicityโ€ is a popular but outdated myth. While sheer visibility can briefly spike awareness, negative press often destroys trust, drives away customers, and damages brand value. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The reality of this PR concept breaks down into a few core truths:
  • Why the myth started: In the 19th-century entertainment industryโ€”often linked to P.T. Barnumโ€”media choices were limited. Just getting people to talk about you was half the battle. Furthermore, human psychology shows that we sometimes mistake familiarity for a positive signal. [1, 2, 3]
  • When it fails (The Modern Era): In a crowded, hyper-connected market with unlimited alternatives, consumers can easily drop brands over controversy, poor ethics, or toxic behavior. Business performance often suffers directly from negative PR, with companies like Bud Light losing significant market share due to backlash. [1, 2]
    • Public consensus: According to discussions on Quora, most users agree that positive public relations are crucial for building long-term brand credibility. Opinions on the platform differ only when discussing individuals or entertainment acts (like reality stars) that thrive purely on notoriety. However, even in those cases, severe scandals can be entirely career-destroying. [1, 2, 3]
Ultimately, the goal is not just to be talked about; it is to be trusted. [1]

You don't have to use the word explicitly to communicate its meaning. You said my statement isnโ€™t true. Thatโ€™s an accusation, not a disagreement.

I said that you're not open to suggestions, because you're still defending this.
Our messages are not intended to defend.

We simply shared our perspective on why we've made these types of partnership over the years, which has been maybe once every ~3 years on average.

The idea that it's only about me is not right, other members are complaining here as well.

It said you were not open to feedback.

That is their opinion, and I think it is reasonably backed by your responses so far. There was basically immediate pushback to the negative feedback.

I don't understand how NamePros thought this was a good idea.

I also don't really think it is a good idea for mods to dislike member posts in general.

We simply shared our perspective on why we've made these types of partnership over the years, which has maybe been once every ~3 years on average.
I have never seen it in my long history on NamePros. It's just one of those lines you don't cross when it comes to advertising, because it is the type of thing that reflects poorly on everyone. IMO.

PSA:

We'll do our best to not send these offers to anyone who doesn't want them.

This means you will potentially miss out on gift cards and other special deals that we believe are genuinely valuable (read: free money). Typically, these offers are too good to give to everyone, and therefore, they can only be sent to specific members.

@Jannes, @Future Sensors, and @bmugford have already been added to the exclusion list.

If anyone else doesn't want to receive special offers, please contact us.

Note that previous DM offers like this had zero complaints, so we may discontinue these entirely based on evolving feedback.

Edited to clarify that the exclusion list will apply to future offers, not the current offer that's already running.
