Hexillion has released a beta version of a new Whois class library that makes it easy to extract Whois information about domains and IP addresses. It automatically finds the correct server, performs a query, and parses the results into a consistent data structure.

Applications
- Tracking domain registrations
- Checking domain name availability
- Advanced Whois web pages
- Detecting (credit card) fraud
- Investigating spam, fraud, intrusions, and other online misbehavior
- Researching Internet infrastructure and usage
- Locating users geographically

Hmmm... What version of Opera are you using?

The demo script returns XML, not HTML. Internet Explorer parses it and displays it nicely. I have a copy of Opera 5 handy, however, and it displays an error saying that the XML isn't well-formed (despite the fact that it is).

I'll investigate further and see if I can track down the problem.

Version 7.10

It displays the whois result in a string of text...and then it crashes

Works ok for me in Opera 7, but Opera doesn't display XML nearly as nice as IE. :)

I've downloaded Opera 7.11, and I've seen the crash (though it doesn't happen every time). This is a bug in Opera. Perhaps it's choking on the UTF-8 byte order mark.

In any case, this brings up the fact that non-IE browsers don't handle raw XML very well in general. Thus, we've modified the demo to return the XML as syntax-highlighted HTML for non-IE browsers. That way everyone can have a pleasant view.

If you want, you can still get the raw XML by adding "&RawXML=1" to the URL.

Thanks for the feedback!
