I have been checking availability for good names with the new upcoming .eu and have noticed that there are some really good names that have sold for pretty high dollar amounts as .coms that have not been registered with the .eu. There are short 2 and 3 letter popular names still available, so I am led to believe here that it would not be wise to reg some of these names with .eu. A lot of generic names that are poplular world wide are available..I am going on the assumption that if the .eu were expected to go over well, these names would have already been regged by somebody...I was deterred from regging any of them because I couldn't believe they weren't already taken! and there has to be a reason for that..so I assumed it wouldn't be a good investment..are any of you jumping to snatch up good names with the .eu?

I think the .eu will be pretty big, unfortunately many companies are taking multiple pre-registrations for the same domain name - who were you checking with ?

Alot of companies will be making loads of interest on your money - I bet on some names there may be thousands of people that have pre-paid for the same domain name !

I normally reg my names with godaddy, that's where I was searching for availability. So if it appears as available, does that mean it is or maybe not really be available?

I am Not positive about godaddy but the majority of places are taking multiple pre-reg's on the same name so it will never show as taken !

I thought there was a thread about this mentioning godaddy but I cannot find it, maybe someone else can clarify it for you concerning godaddy.

Yeah, there was a thread here a few days ago, mentioning that GoDaddy are taking multiple pre-registrations for .eu. That's probably the reason why such good names are still showing up as available on your searches there.

If it helps, 123-reg.co.uk filter out the pre-reg domains.

You need to be careful for this one.

Many registrars, motivated by profiteering, will try to squeeze everything out from speculators and allow anyone to sign up for their pre-reg programs.

If the registrations are cancelled for non-compliance, they will still take the money but the registrant will have to forfeit the name and money spent.

I suspect the .EU registry will come down hard on those who do not qualify with direct evidential prove of domicile, nationality or incorporation, within the first 3 months of landrush.

It will be interesting to watch this.

I am not so sure they can filter out the pre-reg domains as there is no 1 place where this information is held, but as far as I am aware 123-reg will only take one order per domain name and are using TUCOWS as their registrar.

I think they do charge upfront as well.

Lycos takes 1 order per name and does'nt charge for it unless it gets the name, needless to say most of the "prime" names are gone with them !

Hmm yeah you probably have a point there gazzip :) They do only take one order per domain tho for sure via Tucows. An dthey do charge upfront, but you can pull out any time pre-reg and they refund...also if you dont get the domain too obviously.

Thats alright, but the problem with lycos is that they arent even a .EU registrar and I dont trust Pool because they dont seem to be able to catch any domains that arent .com and .net... so Im not so sure they will be able to cut it when the .EU domains are out

The great thing about 123-reg.co.uk is that they will refund ur money if you pull out or dont get the domain name, you wont lose a penny, thats a service! Not only that, if they dont catch the domain... then they wont get any money at all... I wunder if that will affect how hard they work to ensure that you get the name you require

Notice how I am trying to convince myself that they will be able to gat my domain? :hehe: I cant use my solo card on any other .EU registration service :td: But 123-reg.co.uk seem like a trustworthy company

Has anyone else tried pre-registering .EU name with 123-reg.co.uk?

I'm not really expecting/hoping for much to come out of my .eu reg's but at the moment I do not want to pay anything upfront, I would trust 123-reg.co.uk aswell - I have about 25 domains with them and am very happy with their service so far.

Only down side is you have to reg 2 years at a time for .com's but's that no big deal.

Good Luck snatching some good .eu's :)

Many companies are taking multiple registrations and many of them are also taking a fee even if they do not manage to catch the names + money up front.

My few pre regs are with dd24, they take two preregs per name, they will ask for one third of the fees just prior to landrush and they refund money for names not regged - that is the way to do business!

That sounds like a fresh service to me. Ive only pre-registered one domain and if I managed to get it I would be rich :hehe: ... but that means that some other lucky pre-regger will get it before me! But even so, i get my money back :)

I have also pre-regged with DD24, have you had previous experience with them?

Good Point ,Mole
A lot of you seem to miss one big issue with pre-reg. and then when .eu is released for registration.
.EU is not an open ccTLD
Are lot of you WILL not qualify anyway for registration,Under the tough rules.

You can get a little glimpse at the stance being taken by Eurid on registrations by Domain name resellers .

If they are not allowing resellers sell registrations, you really think they are going to relax the rules and allow non-European Union residents to register.

And no, there is no provision in regulations for a Proxy address Fiddle to get around this requirement.

Plus another related issue ,there may be controls over trading in .EU domains to ensure only European residents remain owners.
