I use estibot mostly, before I buy a domain, I was wondering if it was a good measure...

I am looking for advice -
how do you go about deciding how much to pay for a llll/ 4 letter domain...

Use it to find the keyword stats. Don't bother with the dollar amount.

For 4 letter domains:
Look for aged ones
Pronounceable ones

Ones with premium letters. Check here. http://premiumletters.com/

Don't read too much in Estibot

If you need a bot to appraise a domain, you are going to waste money on poor regs.
I would rather suggest that you buy domains you'd be willing to develop. Ask yourself, if the domain is that good, why is it still available. And if you don't understand why it should be valuable, why would somebody else would.

estibot might get you in the right ballpark sometimes, but it's not to be relied upon at all for a dollar amount.

i wouldnt think too much of it

most people say that a .com is worth about 1/10 of an estibot value

I think any automated appraisal is useless. The real value is in the eye of the buyer!

like most have said, you should really ignore the value that estibot gives. Most people use it due to the stats that it provides in one place.

When I first started out I used Estibot and ended up wasting a load of money on domains that I neither sold, or kept.

When I started out a decade ago I don't remember that there was such a tool. Of course there was nothing to help you from registering bad domains on your own, but at least you wouldn't be spoon-fed with bad advice :guilty:

I used Estibot when I sold domains on Ebay and it was quite useful as I could use the Estibot value for marketing. The higher Estibot appraisal the more bids.

But, like the others said don't rely on it. Sdsinc is right, ask yourself if you want to develop it or if anyone else would have a need for it. You can certainly use the value as a factor in your decision to purchase a domain, but mainly buy domains you find useful in case you don't find a buyer :)

It ain't .com but I have a .info that Estibot appraises at $75. Between Adsense and eBay it generates around $100/month so it can go both ways.

The best way to value domain names is by using comps, as does the real estate industry. Variables to consider are:

1) Industry
2) Name type (one word, two word, hyphenated, tld, etc.)
3) Traffic metrics (e.g. type in traffic)
4) Type of traffic (high valued age group, country, etc.)
5) Age of domain registration
6) Ability to develop a site that can be monetized

Two resources for finding comps are DNSalePrice.com and NameBio.com. Find similar names with similar characteristics and you can get a good comp. It takes time.
