Essential Extensions to Get

Hi

I've bought a domain in the .com and .net extensions. From the point of view of essential extensions to have would it be important to purchase the .biz or .org as well?

It depends upon what the domain is, but IMHO it's best to hold the .com. You can pick up additional ext. from there if you'd like, but the necessity of picking those ext. varies on what the domain is about and so forth. IMHO I don't place too much attention on anything outside of the big 3 (.com, .net, .org).

I agree with that. Additionally, you should bear in mind some ccTLDs if the name in question is not English or you are developing it and your target is partially a country having strong and well established ccTLDs. For example, I'd consider having both .com and .co.uk if I was targetting the UK market.

quick correction, .cn is china

canada is .ca

I usually pick the .NET to match the .COM.

If I find a good name and it is available in all extensions, I'll get #1 the dot com
then the .net or .org (depending on nature of business), and usually all three because the value of the names is greatest, IMHO, as a set.

If I buy a .COM, I generally pickup the .NET and .US as well. I think that .ORG is great too but often it doesn't suit the name I'm registering. I generally only add .BIZ to the shopping cart as well if I have a lot of confidence in the name.

In terms of domain speculation, registering anything in addition to the .com is probably a waste of money assuming you are talking about available names. It doubles/triples/quadruples your expenses for a domain that probably isn't even worth much in the .com.

Well, you didn't say if you are going to develop it, or if you are buying strictly for resale.

IF you are going to develop it, and plan to build a business site on the .com, then personally I would secure all 6 main extensions (com/net/org/us/info/biz) to make sure that my 'brand' is protected. All my family members have now done this with their online businesses. Why? Because a while back, somebody registered the .us and .info version of a relative's successful business. They put up a site selling similar products. This was a nightmare, and even though my relative owned the .com, the other person's site was still causing confusion and concern among some customers. Eventually, my relative paid a large amount of money to get those names from the owner. Lesson learned the hard way. He could have secured them for $7 each if he grabbed them while still available to the public.

I'm not saying everybody needs to do this, but if you plan to give your blood, sweat and tears to an online business, it's something you should definitely think about. For $50, you can get them all, and have a little extra peace of mind down the road.

Agreed! Well, actually that remark of yours made me realize/discover something interesting just now (thanks for the inpiration!):
Of one of my business .COMs (that I have owned for 5 years) I also own the .net, .org, and .us as well. Somehow, I never bothered to reg the .biz and .info. Strange thing is though, I just checked and (someone with an account at?) some weird and expensive registrar (an eNom reseller, it seems) that I had never heard of actually reg'd the .info version in 2004, but then put all the WHOIS details in my name, including my own email address?!? I wonder what's behind that? (And no, I did not reg the name myself one night when intoxicated, or something like that! )
