Just in time for the holidays, online auctioneer eBay has made an intense marketing push to let people know where they can get "it."

What is it? It's a domain name, www.WhatIs-It.com for starters. And, it's viral marketing, an area where we haven't seen eBay play in before now.

The site delivers eBay's ‘it' logo in Flash format, where users can change its size and style. They've gone for the humorous angle with their efforts; users can render the logo in wood, steel, or a bound-to-be-controversial pink furry look.
Hurray Hyphens are accepted by someone BIG

Except I don't have many hyphen names... but they can be effective for TV advertising.

considering that they own the non-hyphenated name, i doubt they care if people forget the hyphen. however, for most cases if they didnt have the hyphen I'm convinced that they'd lost a considerable amount of traffic to the non-hyphenated domain.

eBay Inc. owns hyphenated versions of its name with some extensions too.

I don't use hyphens when registering, I just don't think it sounds nice...

One or two hyphens may be good, but too much hyphens ruin the name.

Yeah. Makes telling other people a domain more difficult and a chore.

Equates to less traffic.

Ebay are very commercial and i've seen adverts for them on TV and on bilboards a lot in the past. Of course they're going to use hyphens! You cant remember a long domain at a glance if you notice it on TV if the words arent separated for you. This doesn't change anything BFT, I just dont like hyphens. :D
