I have been ready a lot about duplicate content lately. I was just wondering what everyone thinks.

I created dpsrealestate (dot)com a couple years go for some one. It is all duplicate content and it has not been penalized by google like most people say it would be. At the time it had no pr and no backlinks. Now the the site has a pr2 and gets decent traffic from google. Any ideas why? Is duplicate content really penalized?

I think it depends on how much something is duplicated, something that is only found in one or two other places isn't going to be penalized like some freebie reprint articles that are duplicated thousands of times. It can also take Google awhile to catch on, i used to have a wikipedia mirror up for over a year before google finally smacked me down.

I've done it both ways, i've tried to go the quick and easy route and scrape content and i've spent alot of time and money writing and buying unique content. Quick and dirty can work short term but you're almost always better off putting in the work and developing legitimate sites with unique content. You'll make more $ in the long run, your sites will be worth much much more for resale, and it's more honorable than stealing content.

Duplicate content is not penalized actually. Google just makes choice which pages to rank and does rank only best source of same content. It means new pages/sites without original content usually wouldn`t be even indexed. In case your site has higher PR than instant article source you will take first position over time.

I did not steal the content. It came from EzineArticles.

it all depends on your motive, if you want to game google's indexing capabilities and the robots.txt it's not actually grounds for a penalty but may I suggest you minimize it or if it can't be avoided add some remarks/feedback preferably your own and copy/paste and comment or give feedback on the article being duplicated on your site, for more details about this, see

Sorry I didn't mean to imply that, but you're probably better off stealing content than using reprint articles that are probably reproduced hundreds or thousands of times. Not that i'm advocating that, but i'd guess you'd get better results.

Duplicate content is a myth. As you know if duplicate content was a problem them Google would be the biggest victim of its own rule and article houses would of survive. Just ask Jonathan Leger. He did a great article on this issue and it all makes sense. So go ahead and duplicate whatever you want, its open season. :)

I agree! Its a myth.
Look how much duplicate content is out there. It is encouraged by RSS feeds! So many sites feed news and what not into their sites without penalty.
You should offer things IN ADDITION to any content thats duplicate, but duplicate content will not result in an outright ban.

duplicate content doesn't ban you, it just shoves you into the supplemental index where you'll get next to no search traffic.
