Dropcatching speed

Hi guys,

I would really love to know how fast you would have to be (on average) to catch for instance a 4L.com domain or other domain with some value (and dropcatching competition!). Would you be able to catch something if you can make multiple querries per second or would registrars still beat you to it?

You won't be able to beat a registrar with an API script.
Registrars have direct access to the registry DB, an API is just a gateway to a registrar, to send registration queries.
So it's not just a question of speed. If there is at least one backorder put on the name you can forget the idea.

Thanks for your input, so basically you are saying that if there is one backorder on the name the name is not released to the public. Dropcatching would then only seem a sensible option for domains which are less valuable than backordering costs.

When a domain drops (is deleted) it will be grabbed within milliseconds by a dropcatcher, if a backorder was placed (it can also be a private dropcatcher). In that case you don't really have a chance
The name is actually 'released' to the public as it drops but only for a fraction of a second.
An API will normally beat the handreggers for domains that are not heavily contested. Of course, quite a few people run API scripts so you're not alone

Registrars have direct connections to the registry so they can pound the registry with repeated registration requests for domains that are about to the drop (think of it like a small-scale DDOS attack).
Plus, companies like Enom or Snapnames have tens of registrars working for them, working to get the dropping domains.

Using an API means you send a query to the registrar, the registrar will then forward the query to the registry on your behalf, then return the result to you. Obviously it's much slower and usage is capped.

i know dynadot limit is 10 request per 100 seconds per domain?I'm right?

Hi xtmoney, don't have a list for all api's but I guess about 1/s is the most you will found around.
