I just received the monthly dreamhost newsletter and Brett from Dreamhost calls domainers as squatters. They recently added cctlds to their registration list and to promote it he is dissing us.

Quote from newsletter
If you've tried to register one lately, you've probably come to realize what everyone else has known for the last five years: All the good .coms are taken.

Notice I said "taken" and not "in use". That's because domain squatters buy up what can be had for $9.95/year (or less in some cases) and just hang on to them indefinitely, hoping that someone will come along and offer to buy a domain from them later for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

I presume that you promptly unsubscribed from the newsletter and severed all ties with this company ?

That is poor customer relation skills from a company who uses the phrase "host as many domains as you want" on there home page.. hope he is ceo of the company other wise he should be disiplined for a comment of such short vision and for using the broad brush approach.
I'd imagine domainers are great business for anyone who sells domains at a reseaonable price and is trust worthy.

Brett of dreamhost.com are you sure you know what you are saying here? If you read this feel free to discuss you definition of squatter.

Most of you are squatters though. Whilst there are a few who actually do own decent names and are holding on to them for investment reasons. The majority of people own crap domains who think they are worth millions and are just renewing them year after year thinking they'll finally sell them.

Are you kidding me? There is more than (1) way to earn money from a domain versus flipping and some hold on to their domains because they have plans for them. Not because they are holding out for a prayer.

Didn't notice the connection. You're right. That was a dumb statement.

Amazing how many people forget where they started from.

Dreamhost doesn't earn anything when .coms change hands for "hundreds or even thousands of dollars". In fact, they lose business if those thousand-dollar-coms transfer out.

So what they do is "plant the idea" of cybersquatting to the new guys by telling them about the "hundreds or even thousands of dollars" catch, but directing them instead to virgin ccTLDs where they can squat (hopefully with Dreamhost --- "hey, we gave you the idea buddy, register with us!")

I think they call it Guerilla Marketing. Bottomline, its still a bunch of people thinking about making money.

This is the old hashed out many times, there two views of the definition of domain squatter. One would be someone owning a name they dont have a legal right to own. The other is more general, owning a domain just to flip it in the future. It would be nice if people just used it as the first type, but nothing will make both these two views go away. Yes this newsletter knows better, my guess is they think its a word the common folk understands, and sounds cool to use.

Squatter is more cool word than investor :)

Some people I was selling domains to (not domainers) used this word as a synonym of word domainer. Without any negative sense.

Would agree with you, but very few of us are in the game from the beginning and we also want a piece of pie :)

DreamHost sucks anyway. All domainers should ditch them so they drown.
