The Dow Jones Futures are now limit down -550 points before the open of trade. Trading is suspended until 9.30 am, open of trade.

At -1100 another limit down will occur for 1 hour, the next limit down after this is for half an hour.

If limit down occurs again after 2.30 pm, the market will be left to fall. Looks like today is D day.

How low can the DJ limbo?

With a lot of hedge funds failing, potentially the dow could trade a lot lower. These hedge funds could bring the market literally to its knees and potentially could force the markets to close for a short term period (A few days to a few weeks).

With countries now going bankrupt and needing bailing out, who would be able to bail out US or UK if things got that bad?

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/081024/wall_street.html Ahead of the market's open, Dow Jones industrial average futures fell the maximum allowed limit of 550, or 6.27 percent, to 8,224. That triggered circuit breakers that automatically freeze selling until the market's 9:30 a.m. EDT open. However, traders can still buy stocks and send the market higher. Selling eased slightly later in the morning, leaving Dow futures 548 points lower.

Well Duh!! of course selling eased after they froze selling, what kind of stupid statement is that from Stevenson Jacobs.

Honestly, what good will a rate cut do? previous rate cuts have done nothing. Also it takes 6 months to 2 years to get the full impact of these cuts anyway. All they are aimed at doing is shocking the market, the full pain from the rate cuts will be felt later. Interest rates are already too low.

This whole scenario is frightening. Many of our lives are being destroyed by Wall street and whatever other street has done this. Close these damn markets, especially the US markets till the beginning of next year. Get hold of the market manipulators and send them to Guantanamo, and throw away the keys. They are doing more harm than the terrorists.

Another bloody Friday!

A rate cut will move the flight to tresuries back to stocks. It is the only solution in these situations. Any solutions better than no solution ATM.

Looks like the second limit down has been avoided, so far, so good.

Its a reaction, more than a solution. At the moment they are reacting to news and the markets and causing bigger and wilder swings and volatility. They should have taken a more proactive approach, but maybe now its too late for that anyway.

In some cases, doing nothing is the best solution. In other cases, its the only solution.

Yup and the dollar will drop as quickly as it shot up. This might be a good time to switch to another currency.

That is how things work in Russia, want to see things really fall off a cliff, then start doing stuff like this.

How do you know that will happen? Have you ever seen that happen to predict such a scenario? Most of this panic has been caused by the US markets, which all other markets follow, where the drops are multiplied by 1.5 in comparison the US markets. Do the world a favour, clean up all the manipulation and speculation or close up. >:(

Because it sends a sign "We have no confidence in our markets", it is a third world strategy that does not work. If you close a financial market then it will squeeze the life out of the economy.

The problems in the financial system were not created by speculators, they were created by the poor lending practices of US banks.

Another dizzying day for the markets. It's as if someone gave them a big dose of Viagra.... at least for today. Tomorrow could be quite diferent.

This might be the first time I almost agree with you. The only problem is that it was not only the "lending practices of US banks" that got us into this mess. It was the artificially low interests rates created by the the US Federal Reserve, which is controlled by.. dare I say it.. European bankers.

To illustrate how crazy the stock market is right now --- the historical average annual return has been around 10%. Today, the markets gained that much in a few hours.
