LOL! Yesterday I get a tax form. I expect a certain amount of forms here and there, but not from dotster.com... I open this piece of mail and to my suprise its tax forms saying I had an income of over $4k from dotster.com, My eyes open wide as I think at most I have 2 domains hosted there and most certainly have not received any payments over the last year from them.

Then I notice something wierd. It has my name and address, but someone elses Tax ID number and their social security number...

How would you feel if a company was mailing out your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND AIRING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION!!!

Whats worse is that it means you may be sorting this matter out with the IRS if Dotster is mixing up account information.

Well they never reported it to my tax payer ID number or my social... so we will see what the hell is happening.

Have you verified this is really from Dotster?

Have you considered this may be a scam?

Yes I did stop to think this, maybe someone is using my name, but then I thought, well they would most likely be using my Social and Tax # so I doubt it. Then I thought maybe someone is trying to trick me into calling a fake support number, but the number on the tax forms match dotsters info.

I have contacted their legal dept.

What a major blunder and pain in my A$$.

Hmm, how did they obtain that in the first place?

Good move also to contact their legal department about it.

After further examination it appears authentic.

I meant the social security number is someone elses, not mine yet it has my name on it :-/ and the tax ID is dotsters after review.

I am waiting for response from their legal department. Not sure, but if I had to guess they mixed up the names on their accounts or something, I think I might remember making $4k from them and they definately do not have my ssn on file for registering 2 names.

I am taking bets on how long it will take them to reply, considering it took me 45 minutes to get a single person on the phone from any one of their departments.

Wow, this is pretty amazing. Big mistake on their part.... BIG mistake.

Why would Dotster or any other large domain company even need to mail out anything out to any of their customers when everything's done via email these days.

And also how could they be claiming that you got $4k income. I thought Dotster was a domain reg & hosting company. Do they pay their customers as well?

My guess here is both the SS# and Tax ID is Dotster's. I've had some people
request for the registrar's W9 form for filing tax deductions for their business,
something like that.

They request webmasters who use their paid parking services to submit W9 forms.
