What would happen to dot com domain names if google launches .goog and begins promoting their own .goog extension domain names?

google has billions of dollars to help launch .goog worldwide

and if google allows all .goog domain names to be listed on top of google search engines before any dot com domain names

and if all .goog owners will get more money for google adsense program

basically, all .goog owners will get first class vip treatment from google

what do you guys think would happen to dot com domain names???

but im sure we can all agree with their cash, market cap, and very powerful sway over the entire internet and all its users, they can go in many directions.

there is really nothing stopping them from doing what you say, or at least attempting it. to stop something like that would require standing up to an 800lb gorilla, an effort that history has taught us to be largely futile and overwhelmingly expensive.

i was recently surprised to see that i had some sort of G desktop installed on my computer, automatically launching at startup, though i dont remember dl'ing it. now every time i do a search on the net, right above the top results shows all files on my computer relating to my search! that means G is looking at and keeping tabs on every file on my system, not something I was excited about.

anyone else notice this?

I wouldn't want to use an SEO that didn't list the sites accourding to PR/backlinks/popularity/context..etc.etc.etc. Or where I can't get to the top with my .com. I'm sure many people agree with me.

If Google does something like that, well I think Google wouldn't last much longer.

i think google can use their money to promote and market the .goog extension and easily beat out the dot com extension

I don't quite understand why people think Google is going to do silly crap like this. They haven't gotten into nearly as many facets of the internet as Yahoo, so why is everyone treating them as someone that's trying to dominate the world?

Google has the potential to fall a lot faster than they grew. Such an action could give Google's reputation a severe blow and give more strength to their competition.

.goog would sound very unprofessional because it promotes google the same way [email protected] and [email protected] sounds unprofessional.

Anyway, all that you presented are a bunch of far-fetched hypotheticals. Anything in the world could happen, but right now there is no such thing as a .goog extension, and the probability of that ever even happening might as well be zero. Nor would Google ever be able to do everything that you talked about with this hypothetical extension, there are something called anti-trust laws, as well as competition to keep everybody in place.

Your post is one of the silliest that I have seen in some time. There is absolutely no substance behind anything that you said.

Firstly I dont think Google would ever get their own extension...mainly because of the fact that they have no need/use for one...sure, they could allow people to buy them for google pages and Google mail however its still not a part of their business. Plus ICANN would most likely reject it (that is unless google threw them a lot of money as a bribe).

Even if Google did get its own extension, do you seriously think that it would affect the .com industry? Of course not! In a way it would be a good thing...all Google hostees would be within their own extension!
