dot co confusion.

Hello,

I wonder if anyone could help clear up some confusion about .co domains for me. I have read that they are now supposed to represent company instead of Columbia, but I still see people referring to them for use in Columbia only, and many dismiss their use for anything commercial because of the confusion with same name dot coms.

2 months back I purchased a few dot co domain names thinking that they would be a good investment, but I am unsure about potential buyers, should I assume that anyone interested in the names would only want to use them in Columbia, or are the dot co domains gaining popularity. I only ask because of the difference of opinion out there and would like an up to date take on things.

Officially it is supposed to be cctld of Colombia, end of story.

But is it confined to Colombia only - of course not, just like many other cctlds. Will it ever become anywhere near as popular as dotcom, I don't think so, but who knows...

Personally for me, the major issue is not that domain belongs to a country, but confusion: many people will always think it's a typo, that you forgot or ommited "m" at the end, so they will type com instead of co.

Why would you post this? I think my question is clear enough. I checked some sales history on NameBio before I post but I wanted to hear opinions from the experienced sellers. You reported some sales to me earlier and I see you use .co for your hosting business. I am sure you have an opinion. Posting a link to Google is just insulting.

As a domainer the positive thing I see in .co domains is that one-word/dictionary names are still available and affordable to most. End-users also weigh the options of hyper-expensive .com or relatively cheap .co alternative(s).
Nevertheless, if you can afford it, .com is still the king.

Yes, one-word. short, dictionary name, and may be 3L, is the way to go.

So it's officially a country code extension for Columbia, but used globally for business, makes it kind of a mixed up extension in my mind. I do like it though, very short, and the co reminds me of a company first and foremost.

Of course .co is far from alone in turns of extensions that are both country code and used generally, with .io, .ly, .cc, .pw and .tv being obvious ones. To my knowledge .co has no restriction in terms of who can own them.

I think they will never command nearly the price of a .com (and because of confusion with .com are likely not wanted by major companies). That being said they do continue to sell now and then in the $$ to $$$$ mainly for small company startups, so when picked up for a small price, worth trying to sell for first year. The high renew costs make them not good to hold long term, imho, unless you have a really great name.

We just bought DistantLearning•co - your post sounds like it was written several years ago, when .co confusion might have existed.

More like 2015 from what we understand by now. Dot co domains are alright. In Columbia people use both but everywhere else developers and visitors don't think of them as Colombian any longer, if they even knew this to start with.

.co is a country code domain for Colombia.
However, for last many years it has been open to all and actively promoted for use by all. In search Google treat it as generic, rather than regional.
I recently reviewed sales and trends in the extension in the NamePros Blog. It continues to do well.

it's hard to get sellable co now since co went prem and since 1 million domainers understood its one of the most sellable tlds and regged tons of them on 2$ or 3$ promos.

I mean really ita just getting worse by day handreg wise.. so people who still sell co have regged them while ago or have prem ones. otherwise the odds are just seroously not in yer favor.

In the good old days a 'Company' may have abbreviated the word 'company' to be 'co.' rather than what we are assuming the '.co' stands for today. Therefore, on letter heads and newspaper (Google that!!!) advertisements 'Reddstagg Domains and Internet Company' would have been represented as 'Reddstagg Domains and Internet Co.'

This is perhaps why there may be some confusion over whether the '.co' we are referring to here relates to Colombia or Company.

I hope that this clarifies the situation for anyone under the age of 30 who may not know this lol.
