I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

Just a guess but you may be getting mixed up between the actions SELL and OFFER FOR SALE. Sell assumes a buyer (which is why I asked "how much" (are you selling it for), while offer for sale does not.

That's just brand protection in case they expand into the UK.

I can remember picking up a Jack Reacher book at the library - it must have been a donation as it was a UK edition and it was "tyre-this" and "tyre-that" and "torch-this" and "torch-that" (UK for flashlight).

It literally drove me crazy.

I can register domains they already took away from me and other people.

Some issues seem to have been fixed at CIRA. The remaining issue major issue seems to be poor documentation to the registrars and how to handle reserved & restricted domain names when requested for registration. So at this point, its mostly a problem at the registrar level - they're not capturing the fact that these domains are reserved/restricted and giving an appropriate message to the end users and they proceed to allow them to be registered.

And you'll notice that you can _seemingly_ register some domains at some registrars but not others. In particular GoDaddy seems to be one that had screwed up their implementation and allowing you to register these domains, but there are many others too.

However, when you try and register them now, you'll notice that now the domain goes into a pendingCreate status (which you'll see reflected in whois). These domains are being hand-reviewed by CIRA to see if you're eligible to register the domain. If not, they are getting rejected - which puts the domain into a pendingDelete status (again, see whois).

Right now CIRA is in the process of rejecting those applications. I had registered 50+ domains as a test. All went from a pendingCreate status to a pendingDelete status today. If that applied to you, now you've gotta get refunded from your registrar. I fully expected this situation to happen, but figured I didn't want to miss out completely if they let some things slip through the cracks. I sure wish CIRA woulda had their shit together from the start and we wouldn't have wasted all this time.

So - if you're currently able to register stuff and it goes into a pendingCreate status - don't bother anymore, CIRA is slowly pulling their heads out of their asses and getting around to rejecting these domains...

Domains like city.ca still haven't been revoked yet for some reason. district.ca returns the "restricted" message from whois. Not sure if that's because no one registered it before they blocked it, or if it had been registered but already deleted.

If you're lucky enough to still have some domains not in a pendingDelete or pendingCreate status, keep your fingers crossed but don't hold your breath.

And if you're like me and did a ton of research over the past week, you likely stumbled onto a few domains that were worth registering that were NOT reserved or restricted... So I guess all this time was not a _complete_ loss.

Uh oh, ON.CA just had its WHOIS updated today - they probably sold it to some sucker.

That's a really bad one to be screwing around with as a lot of businesses still use XZY.ON.CA for their primary website - it would be like someone erroneously being allowed to buy CO.COM or COM.CO - Yeesh.

It was updated because CIRA put it into pendingDelete status.

I saw that too and I got a couple myself that I figure are mine.

Canspace was right on the ball, it registered and the next day they reversed them and said I get a refund. I have not seen the refund a few days later but I assume its coming.

YOu are right at godaddy it goes into a locked status and you can't touch any settings.
Some did go through and are currently resolving.

Like in your case I got quite a few and am keeping my fingers crossed that some of the ones that went through actually stick.

• the Canadian top level country code .ca and certain generic top level domain three letter names (including but not limited to .com.ca, .org.ca, .net.ca, .edu.ca, .gov.ca, .int.ca, and .mil.ca);

• the following names: village.ca, hamlet.ca, town.ca, city.ca and ville.ca;

The entire document is an interesting read. Even if you tried to contact a tiny municipality and agree to buy it from them, you'd still need explicit permission from CIRA in advance. Here's an interesting example. Cadillac.ca was dead for a long time. Someone at Cadillac (the auto corp) must've approached the town and got them to register the domain, then are paying them to redirect the domain to CadillacCanada.ca. So this way CadillacCanada.ca gets the traffic, Cadillac the town gets some $$$ and CIRA didn't need to approve it because it was never transferred. Note that it is OK for Cadillac the town to lease the domain because leasing is only banned by CIRA if the lessee doesn't meet the CIRA presence requirements.

Also note these clauses:

3.6 Rejection, Refusal to Register, Suspension and Deletion by CIRA. CIRA, in its sole discretion, has the right to (i) reject and refuse any Registration Request for any reason whatsoever, to (ii) delete or suspend a Domain Name Registration within 30 days of the Registration Date and/or to (iii) delete or suspend a Domain Name Registration pursuant to the provisions of the Registrant Agreement.

So some domains may fall under (ii), i.e. you've got 30 days; and some domains may fall under (iii), i.e. CIRA has indefinite rights to cancel it if it was explicitly restricted in the Registrant Agreement (of which these general registration rules are going to be part of).

So, I'm guessing village/hamlet/town/city/ville will be lost or should be considered lost. That goes for any 3rd level conflicting domains too. Beyond those, you may have hope if it can slide by for 30 days.

LOl- ya the "tyre" spelling looks silly here ( in Canada), frankly, was surprised to see that version registered, even as brand protection. Didn't realize it was a legitimate spelling used in UK, so as expansion purposes makes sense.

Thanks for that info from cira. I had been searching for this part since there had been talk about leasing to say Californians.

Note that it is OK for Cadillac the town to lease the domain because leasing is only banned by CIRA if the lessee doesn't meet the CIRA presence requirements.
