I see any of the three as very reasonable and worth following up. I might well be wrong, but i wonder if prospects might well be higher in your third category. Can see higher likelihood of the name appealing to them as a descriptive product name easily remembered. Best wishes with it.

I was wondering about that too? How does that happen? What does auto-closed mean?

Not sure about NP, but on other forums it usually means the owner of the account closed it, rather than the site booting you out.

Okay, something definitely happened with MapleDots, as he doesn't seem to have any active domain listings (https://mapledots.ca/listings/ has been deleted) and his prime domains now all forward to Mardian Natural Medicine, one of his online stores.

Something bad must have gone down.

Weekly TBR Pick to go First:

    TPC.CA (to MyID, naturally)

After that, it's a real coin toss.

Hey, is the TBR still at 3PM this week? I think some registrars have old info from the EST/Daylight Savings days and may have been an hour with the notification.

I read all of the candidates bios and a couple of things struck me:

    1. There are an awful lot of accountants running. I don't think that finances are an area where CIRA needs dramatic improvement.
    2. I sense a lot of careerists, looking to expand their resumes.
    3. Aside from yourself, I only see one other candidate who may be friendly to domainers' needs.

I'll state my concerns to yourself and to other candidates.

I'm concerned about the levels of transparency in CIRA's processes - specifically the TBR.

I cannot find any regulation or directive from CIRA forbidding registrars from participating in TBR auctions - therefore they do. This creates a conflict of interest with actual bidders participating in the auction. Regardless of the price reached, the winning registrar essentially pays the minimum fee to CIRA, or pays the winning fee to itself.

There appears to be a very close relationship between CIRA and some registrars.

I would like to see systems introduced by CIRA to publicly identify each and every bidder in these auctions, to specifically bar registrars from participating in their own auctions, and any measures necessary to control/eliminate shill bidding.

I also would like CIRA to begin managing and regulating .ca as an asset class. There has been very limited growth of the extension in recent years and the perceived value of the extension is minimal among many Canadian businesses.

I hope that you respond to my concerns in this thread and that other candidates and NP'rs will participate in the discussion.

This may have to do with the skills that were called for in the Nominating Committee.

On top of the minimal fee, there is of course also a technology cost of running the drop catching system and a cost of potentially using more than one registrar to catch the names. However, this is probably easily covered by the auction results.

How real your concerns are has certainly been shown in the past, i.e. an insider bidder on a .COM drop catching platform driving up prices in other TLDs - the Halvarez scandal.

I have some knowledge about the technical process for .CA dropcatching, but have participated in TBR auctions before and am quite familiar with the way domains drop in a number of other TLDs.

I'd like to hear more about this - I would hope that the relationship is equal between CIRA and their registrars, in a similar fashion as ICANN is trying to give all registrars equal access to their registries.

Traditionally the board has very little involvement in these types of operational decisions, as it serves more of a guiding function.

While this may not be the answer that you seek, your suggestion is something that I need to mull over for a bit, since it might somehow require to move the auctions from the registrars to CIRA, or at least work more with the registrant profiles as identifiers. I am not a lawyer, but there may potentially also be other means to investigate some of the bids in the auction.

Given a chance, I'd try to take a closer look at this and the potential alleys to prevent shill bidding etc.

This is a very interesting and frequent topic in the domain industry. CIRA alone can probably not change something like this overnight, but could champion a different view of the domains in its ccTLD. I do agree that CIRA needs to continue pushing the TLD and the value of it in general, I still see way too many local businesses that go for a generic top level domain instead of picking a .CA.

Thank you for voicing your concerns and posting them here and taking your time to read through the applications. You might want to consider also posting them in the campaign forum that opened today:

That's what usually happens on a "weak week" like this, some of the middling options get picked up cuz people gotta spend money I guess.

And I have a feeling that there was a purpose behind grabbing FXN.CA so early (like developing it based on phonetics - i.e. FIXIN - repair, cooking, food delivery?) or at least I hope there was.

Probably food-based, as eating/snacking is the hot hobby right now, and it's virtually taken over retail. In most downtown sectors, there are few if any stores, just more and more places to feed your face.

So basically a weak week is "buyers/investors" market.

When I see "X" in LLL, I think short form of extra, extreme etc

FX is always a great start Forex, Foreign Currency, Fix, Forecast, Effects, I wouldn't call this a low level LLL

    In Canada I would.

Every single LLL I've sold has been an exact acronym to the company buying it, and while these non-acronym domains may "look good" and "have lots of potential uses," I still don't see this one being a hot ticket in today's market.

But hey, that's just one man's opinion and it may sell for a million tomorrow.

Nah, the times I pick up the best stuff is on weeks packed with premiums, where there aren't enough Registrar Connections for the amount of domains available, and you have Top 10 picks any other week going in the 30's and 40's.
