Just tried to reg a .com through godaddy, and it said unavailible. I checked the whois directory for backorder purposes and it says domain expired on 2/27. ??? :?

Usually the domain will become available 80 to 85 days after expiry. If the domain is with godaddy then 24 days after expiry it will be on auction at www.tdnam.com.
If the domain is registered at godaddy this is a special case. If it is at godaddy you should backorder it. It will still go to auction at tdnam after 24 days.
Let me give an actual example of my recent experience:
21 January 2007: A godaddy domain expires
14 February 2007: The auction starts on tdnam.com
22 February 2007: I won the auction and I pay the same day
05 March 2007: After waiting for 15 more days for the previous owner to renew, finally godaddy transfers the domain into my account.
Even if you backorder and the backorder is successful the domain still will go to auction on tdnam. The best thing you can do now is to backorder at godaddy and at snapnames and then wait.
