Domains with numbers?

Hi:

Just wondering from the experts what the general concensus is about domains that include numbers? I am not talking about LLNL domains, but potential end user ecommerce names such as 1800****.com or ***911.com. I would probably just park or do some limited page development on the names, but the end result is an in-demand popular search word domain name that would be of interest to an end user.

Thanks in advance for your input. I have some good ideas, but just wanted to check before possibly wasting my money.

Alan

It's hard to say without knowing what else the domain has. I'm sure there are plenty of good 1800***** or ****911 domains, but there are more bad ones than good ones. If it sounds good and you think you can do something with it, go ahead and get it... it only costs a few bucks.

With any domain name it's a good idea to do some research with Google's traffic estimator, Overture keyword bid tool (or with Goodkeywords.com), or a service like WordTracker.com.

This will allow you to get some idea for the traffic potential before you purchase. Others will also do a search in Google for the domain/keywords in the domain, but I don't think this gives you any meaningful information.

If you have a good idea, then follow your heart and imagination,
don't listen what the experts here have to say,
because while there is very good information here,
and very knowledgeable people that will give you very good advise,
they just might not be as creative as you are, or have as big imagination.
breaking some rules is always a good rule
sorry for not being more specific

i would go for it allan- i also regged a bunch of vanity domains (1800/1888)- good keywords are going for 5000.00 and over on sedo- some for 10,000. will they sell for that? not sure- but, i think it will be a solid future investment -
- it makes for a good brandable name
- it is VERY easy to remember
- it will work well with mobile users, as they surf the web more via a cellphone- people remember phone numbers, and they will be on a cellphone- it just makes sense-
- there are no fluff keywords

i would go for it personally :)
- 1800 flowers and 1800 contacts works pretty well :)

I'd use caution before registering 1-800 domains. I'm sure there have been more than a few embarassed domainers trying to unload these types of names when the actual 1-800 phone number is already in use by a company. Then you wind up with a completely worthless domain name.

Like was said above, if you are a creative thinker (and implementer) you can succeed. I picked up the name in my sig knowing it wasn't a very valuable name in and of itself, but I paid $20 to have someone write a script and added some affiliate links and now it makes around $500 / year is commissions just from NP traffic.

I would take the advice of the experts here. They have plenty of experience seeing what sells and what doesn't. There is always room for innovation, but lots of new domainers come and go on these boards thinking that domaining is get rich quick when it's not (not any more so than any other business).

Probably one of the best pieces of advice is not only to consider how many 1-800 domains have sold, but how many others have not sold. Then you get an good idea of the odds of success.

We're all about new ideas because we came up with domains that look like phone numbers and/or are translated using a phone keypad ~ Thus 'Numbers That Work'

Our best example is using the keyword 'pizza'.
1-Pizza.com
1-Pizza.mobi
1-74992.com (74992 spells Pizza on a phone keypad)
1-74992.mobi

The 1- mimics a phone number so it's a great memory trigger for people using a phone to connect to the web.

We think it will take a while but at the end of the day, will people that own 1-Dash Domains value them at PPC or as a marketing tool for mobile surfers?

nice ntweb!

skahy- my preference when using it as a domain is 1800-keyword.com. i just think it looks better and sounds better. when you have to say it to someone, you either say:

1 dash 800 keyword or
1800 dash keyword

your not breaking up the "1800" with the dash after- but that is just my preference :) i see it both ways, and with no dash, and with 2 dashes too- but i like one dash instead of two :)

good luck! i love the vanity names!
