We've all seen them. They've provided fun, frolic and mirth for the domainers here:

not to mention $4.80 per time to ebay for listing fees. You'd think ebay would try and harness this "golden goose" which set me to thinking. With any listing on eBay starting at $500+ generating $4.80 its a wonder they havent gone down this path:
e.g.
500-5000 $4.80
5001-10000 $6.80
10000-100000 $10.80
100000-1000000 $20.80
1000000+ $30.80

or something similar.

I was wondering what the "break point" would be for people putting up crazy listings (as opposed to those that had genuine value).

Can only assume ebay have done there homework and picking up $4.80 a time is "money for jam" as we say here (i.e. when you get the cash for doing nothing or very little) and are very happy with the status quo, thank you very much.

Any comments or thoughts?

I think the breakpoint would probably be $5.00 honestly. Risking $5 is not the same as risking $30 a clip to try it. Ebay is well aware of that and knows these crazy auctions won't sell. But they figure it's better to get 30 people to pay $5 than it is to get 1 person to pay $30. So in the end, they make more money by selling low and getting quantity than price. Considering they are selling air, not a bad thing...

Have to agree with you, although it doesnt do anything for the quality of the listings. But its not about that is it, its $$$$ for you know who.

No, it doesn't, but then it's the nature of the beast and the game within. I guess the other way to look at it as that domain doesn't look too bad for only $500 when the others are millions. :)
