Let's consider this possible scenario which I read here. The Sun flashes and destroys any electric machine on Earth. The internet is globally down. No internet, no satellites, nothing. All the servers are melted. If we suppose that one day the electrical power will turned again on without knowing the exact time, in meanwhile how you could keep your domains (or other digital assets)?

Sounds like Y2K? It passed, man.

Then 2012. Iโ€™m too optimistic for doomsday.

Only worry have 1,100-foot (340-meter) space rock that was supposed to come frighteningly close in 2029 and 2036. NASA ruled out any chance of a during those two a while ago. But still potential 2068 collision still loomed.

First detected in 2004, Apophis is now officially off NASAโ€™s asteroid โ€œrisk list.โ€

โ€œA 2068 impact is not in the realm of possibility anymore, and our calculations donโ€™t show any impact risk for at least the next 100 years,โ€

Doomsday domains?

Your event is as close to Armageddon as i saw

In a scenario where the entire global electric grid and computers went down, domains and other digital assets would be the least of our worries.

All the global supply chains would be broken and practically speaking the world would descend into chaos quickly.

If that happens it happens. There is nothing you can do about it. Almost all investments would be rendered useless in that scenario.

I plan on running it on batteries ..battery price about to skyrocket

โ€œShowcase your Apocalyptic names.โ€

Thanks! Suggestion2: Apophis. LOL

In that scenario, we would be f****d (to put it bluntly)

As @bmugford mentioned, digital assets would be the least of our worries. No electrical power? Even thinking about it makes me want to cry

But what if electricity come up again? If all memory is deleted, I think it's good idea to print a physical domain certification to prove that you are the real owner.

I hate those "inspiration, help me find a purpose, help me understand the world, help me sir please sir" things

Hate, hate, hate ...ugh

Given an extreme enough scenario like you've mentioned, maybe something could be done, and maybe something offline could be implemented / redeemed for your digital assets when the good times are back ...I don't know. We'd come up with something, after we've dealt with the other stuff, with the power being off ...sharpening our swords, crafting our bows and arrows

Our life will be the same, except for machines. Fire for cooking, bike for transportation, etc. The humanity will be able to rebuild electricity power in my scenario. If not, there is no reason to have domains. How we will be able to recover digital assets when the life be back to normal? Owners of top premium names like z.com will lose millions of dollars if they can't prove their ownership.

Hmm, I don't know about "the same"

- Travel to other countries, that doesn't take many days / months
- Advancing tech / innovation
- Supply chains (vast)
- Smart phones, other gadgets
- All the home stuff
- Gaming / amusement

...just life. Without that stuff, it sucks (for me, at least). We'll figure it out if the sun is really going to cause us problems in the near future. Other than that, we're worrying about an event that isn't going to happen, at least anytime soon. As mentioned, something offline could be implemented / redeemed for your digital assets when the good times are back from this "mega chaos", I'm sure

Maybe Verisign has some kind of backup plan. Would be cool to know whether they got a 'cold' copy of the domains and their owners. Imagine they had it on paper - Windows would suddenly seem tiny. :xf.grin:

All the servers are melted.

Melted? Whaaa?!

Are you sure that you had enough research about solar flares?

Nothing is going to melt bro, calm down.

Yeah, it could fry electronic circuitry and data storage from hard drives to solid state drives would be at major risk, but it is not going to physically melt them.

Something like this would likely happen on a long enough time scale, but on a long enough time scale almost anything would happen...gamma ray bursts, super volcanos, etc.

There is really no way to easily prepare for these type of extremely rare events.

I guess if you were that concerned you could build a massive Faraday cage to shield your electronics.
