The wife and I play scrabble, so while I was waiting my turn this evening I decided to look up domainer. Well, it wasn't in the dictionary, so I went to the scrabble dictionary online, and the response says:

OOPS! That's not a valid word.

Seriously, I didn't bold oops and put it in red, lol! You mean this industry couldn't after 20+ years get Oxford, or the word police to recognize domainer as being a word.? And to think, it's not even misspelled:xf.grin:

It sure seems hypocritical to me for an industry to use a non word to determine the gamers...oops, that's not a word either, lets try "players" that make up the industry.

What's wrong with this picture,,,can anyone explain? Thanks,

Bulloney :wacky:

It takes years for the oxford dictionary to recognize words.

gamers will get recognition long before domainers ever will because in all reality we are a small insignificant group when compared to gamers. Yes we control a lot of internet addresses but 80% of the population does not understand anything we do. To them they type in Apple and they never think about it again.

My spellcheck underlines gamers and domainers and I have added domaining and domainers a dozen times, it does not seem to want to accept it. I use google spell check.

Thanks MapleDots...it seems the more I learn about this industry the less I know. Even "stinker" and "f**ker" are in the scrabble dictionary. Gamer is in the dictionary, and if you put an apostrophe in gamer's, it passes spell check.

You're right about 80% of the population not understanding much if anything about this industry. That's why I believe we need to go to the consumers and educate them on things like brands, gTLD's ccTLD's. Personally I think its an excellent time to actively promote and educate customers about this industry.

I'm surprised you even had a thought about this since you don't consider yourself to be a domainer ;)

Yes, you've raised this quite valid point in another post. Both Domaining and Domainer are just adopted words from the 90's as buying and selling of domains for profit started to get popular. Quite a few so-called professional domainers hate the words and say they belittle the time, negotiation skills and investment that's put into the business. And of course most Professionals hate 'All encompassing' words that don't distinguish them and hurt their pride. Bit like being a professional engine restorer and just being called a mechanic.

I can remember this being a conversation piece many times in the 20 odd years I've been involved in domains Occasionally you'll get the press use the word, it's just a short natural extension to the word 'Domain' and nobody seems to have invented or popularised a more defining term.

ps, we do occasionally get called 'Boodsuckers' or 'Spongers' plus a few others but none of them have proved popular :)
