Is it safe to invest in domains with abandoned or cancelled trademark status?

Depends which country your finding your cancelled trademarks, and which extension you're considering investing in.

Also worth considering: "Please note that a trademark registration may be invalidated if a third party in Canada has made prior use of a similar trade name or trademark." - source(Canadian Intellectual Property Office) - I would definitely check if the same applies in the US.

Also do you plan to invest and develop long term, or just deal exclusively as investments for resale? If it's the latter, you'd probably be OK as long as you do your due diligence.

Like any legal advise, I would highly recommend you check with a lawyer preferably on in this field. Last thing you want to do is put out money based on a recommendation from a forum or chat room. So, if you don't want to go that route, then you have to ask yourself how much are you willing to gamble. Besides, you probably could get that one question answered for free if you ask the right lawyer.
