Hi all,

I was looking at a domain to purchase, and while checking the whois to see where and when the domain was registered, I noticed that the domain status was "Client Transfer Prohibited."

What exactly does this mean? The domain still had at least 3 years before it expired, and the registrant info all looked to be legitimate.

Does it mean that the domain is under dispute? Is the clients account in bad standings at their registrar?

Is it just what it sounds like? That if I purchase a domain for sale with "Client Transfer Prohibited," it means I will only be able to have the domain at the registrar it is currently registered at.

The more I research domains, the more I see that have this odd status.

Thanks for any info you can give :)

It could mean that the domain has been registered within the last 60 days, and can't be transferred to another registrar.

Most likely the registrant has locked the domain at their registrar. What extension is the domain name? It seems to be common with GoDaddy.

I am guessing the domain is locked and therefore it cannot be transferred. I assume that if the domain is unlocked, it should be able to be transferred because it appears it has already been regged for more than 60 days.

Some were and some were not regged in the last 60 days.

I know some that I looked at were from GoDaddy, mostly .com extensions.

So you think it's just another way of saying, Domain Status: LOCKED?

Thanks for the input. Just wanted to make sure for future purchases.

I don't know why it is but all .ORG domains say this when you look them up in WHOIS.SC. I never bought a .ORG domain so I'm not 100% sure, but I think that it doesn't really mean anything. After 60 days of regging it you should be able to transfer it to anywhere you want.

I think you may be right. I think it is just another way of saying that it is locked because if you look up any .ORG domain in WHOIS.SC you will notice that the line where it would normally say if the domain is locked or not is not there like it is for other TLDs.
