Domain scanning programs.

I always see people talking about programs they have to search for available domains, I was wondering where I can find these? I tried downloading a few, but they were just trial programs and I really couldn't get a feel for the full extent of what they do. I also downloaded one that seemed to be free, but it kept telling me domains were available when they were not and vice versa.

I'd like to be able to generate lists of domains easily... For example I choose 3 char domains and it will generate a list of all possible 3 char domains, then search for their availability. I'd also like one that can search domains for OVT, links, etc...

I know they have some for sale, which is rough for me right now, because I only have about $200 in my "Domain Budget"

Are there any free programs available or do I have to keep doing things the hard way until I can afford the software?

Also, what software do you recommend as being the most versatile and feature packed?
