I was thinking about reg a .net of a popular site. The .com is a very popular site but the .net version of the name isnt taken. If i reg the name and park it can i get sued?

.US domains.US domains
Depends ... have you checked the "USPTO" for a filed ™ (to start)? :gl:

Secondly, why do you desire the ".NET" (specifically)... please be candid? :talk:
Thanks, I'll visit again with your reply.

I want the .net because i know i will get some typin traffic from the name and that can generate some revenue. The site won't be identical but it will have links to other sites.

Lets say the domain name is techtv.com and techtv.net isnt taken and you registerd it. Now techtv.com is a pc related website if someone were to register if available techtv.net and made it into a computer directory would that be illegal?

How do you check if a domain name is filed there?

The drop-off of type-in traffic from ".COM" to ".NET" is VERY large ... how are you sure that the potential type-in's here (for the ".NET") would be worth your while, IYHO?

Righto, check the trademarks SEARCH ... good place to start, IMHO.
Also, try to answer ... if it seems such a good "deal", why didn't the owner's of the (popular) ".COM" register it long ago?
See where I'm headed?

Those two terms for the domain name are not comming up on that website. So i take it they don't have a trademark or patent pending. I reg a .net and .org of two new rock bands a while back and got 100s of typins a day. I figure any traffic would be worth a 6 dollar reg fee. I can make my money back atleast from ads in due time. I own a hosting company so those fees would be free.

I am unsure of your search variables, so I can't say ... regarding the ™ IMHO.
Sound like you're all set here, so all the best!

Yes, as Jeff as already stated you should check the copyright first. However, I entirely agree with him, that it might not be worth it. Almost all type in traffic goes to .com domains. It is natural for most people to type in .com first, then go onto .net , .org , etc. I think you would get VERY VERY VERY little traffic, and doubt you would make the reg. fee back. I would recommend not registering the domain, but if you do, good luck!

I agree to people typing in .com first always rather than .net
if your case is ... the .net is taken but the .com is not
then it's a different story :)

You'll only know this for sure after you've blown 8 bucks.
