The internet has changed and evolved ever since it's ancestors first came to life in the late 1960's. Some technology fades away and is forgotten; other aspects continue but are overlaid, like geological sediments, so that they are now longer visible but are still present under the surface.

The Domain Name System โ€” both the technology of DNS and the deployed naming hierarchy we all use โ€” are among those aspects of the internet that, although they feel solid and immutable, are slowly changing underneath our feet.

Act I: In Which DNS Fades to Translucent Grey

Internet Domain Names had a good twenty-year run from the early days of the World Wide Web (1995) through 2015.

Some people made a lot of money through domain name speculation. Others made money by wallpapering Google Ad Sense advertisements over vacuous websites. And a busload of attorneys made a good living chasing down shysters trying to make a buck off of the trademarks of others.

And through its perceived control of domain name policy, ICANN grew into a ever-bloating, money absorbing bureaucracy worthy of Jonathan Swift.

But things are changing. The days of domain names as the center of internet policy and internet governance are ending. Domain name speculation will slowly become a quaint shadow of its former self.

What is driving these changes?

It is not that the Domain Name System (DNS) is becoming less important as a technical way of mapping structured names into various forms of records, most often records containing IP addresses.

Nor is the Domain Name System used less then heretofore.

Nor are the knights of intellectual property becoming any less enthusiastic about challenging every domain name that they feel does not pay adequate homage to the trademarks they are protecting.

And national governments continue to believe that domain names are the holy grail of levers they can use to impose their views of right and proper behavior onto the internet.

All of that remains. And it will remain.

What is happening to DNS is more subtle: Domain names are slowly becoming invisible.

Why do the domain investors of note post on socialmedia instead of their blogs or developed websites or develop even more domains?
Answer:
Why do you grab the TV remote and surf the channels when you are bored at home???

IMO FB will have the same faith as Myspace did.... Social media trends change every 5 to 10 years, so FB would be a bad investment long-term, but that's just me!

Fb has access to a vast amount of patents and trademarks etc which will serve it well in due course

But I still reckon Deliveroo will be bigger than fb in time because having fast food delivered frequently will never go out of fashion

Because business is where the people are and there are nearly 2 billion on the same website but I still reckon fb won't always be one of the biggest websites

I still reckon that some bod will create a super huge website that will dwarf fb in size and users but not sure what it will be

It could even be Deliveroo which ironically is founded on a Co. uk it being founded in the uk
I remember when MySpace was huge! And now?

Exactly - I doubt anyone still uses it but I don't think it was bought to continue being a website - it's data is worth a fortune as would fbs be if it ever was to be sold in the future

There is a big difference between companies needing a domain name and them needing YOUR domain names. The real question is personal, does a company(s) want MY domains?

Good point - ar and vr are allegedly the next big thing as are game related websites etc but the next Internet tech giant won't be buying every possible variation of these sectors in every possible gtld tld etc

They will just choose the most appropriate domain in these sectors that suits their business model and or vision and pay a decent price for it and create a multi billion dollar website on it

why does everyone want to kill domains?
Because they didn't get the good ones when they could have?

Email is here to stay and so are domain names too. IMO...
We can all use gmail ID, but since you already have AOL mail, even that might not be necessary.

well your just stating the obvious aren't you...

cause every company out there.. or every enduser.. for every niche of domaining... just buys what they want and need.. the whole point is that you do not have generally the faintest ideas what companies will there be.. or endusers.. needing which of your domains... hence we have domainers.. domaining.. and domain portofolios .. for companies to "pick" from.... and this applies to all niches of domaining. without exception.

and no.. it isn't just about multi billion dollar companies.. there is all kinds of other endusers and companies before those billion dollar levels too. all potential clients for domainers.

I can remember seeing trucks back in the day with telex numbers on them etc but when was the last time you saw a telex number?

Technology moved on

It did then

And will do faster than it did then and more frequently

If technology moves away from domain names which it could easily do it may mean that long term domain investors could quite easily be left sitting on huge domain name portfolios of names that were expensive to buy but could become worthless almost overnight - website usernames may become the new domain names

Domain names are ideal for businesses to do business with their customers but it won't be long before secure payment facilities and secure direct messaging facilities exist on social media websites or profile usernames become websites which would mean domain names are no longer required

Its only a matter of time

you probably wanted to say.. its only a matter of a very long time.
not sure how old you are, but writer of that article judging on his foto, will be only seeing all this occur in his ghostly/astral format.
