Apologies if there is a thread I've overlooked that discusses this in greater detail, but may I ask, what is the opinion of the NamePros community regarding the future of, or implications for, the current domain name environment for future generations.
I have a 2 year old, for whom planning for the future (rather geekily) includes considering if I should register things for him now that I think he'd want to use. I'm lucky enough to own my surname in the .com format. As a consequence, my whole immediate family have benefited from being first @ last dot com for the last 10 years. Never having to change your personal email address, and everyone remembering it so easily, has been a tremendous asset. I also grabbed my surname on various social media platforms as my username, again a very handy asset.
As we "run out" of shorter/high-quality domains and usernames increasingly, what are future generations going to use? Most gTLD's I've seen focus on either nouns or brands. Is there a business model for gTLD's for the most common family surnames? Social media platforms will undoubtedly come and go, but for some I see the likelihood of a lucrative market in family orientated, vanity usernames. More so, if email is still a prevalent form of identity, web authentication or communication 10 15, 20 years from now, is my assumption wrong that surname relevant domain names will be of ever increasing value?
