if u like it, then why the need to research further?

Nice question, could be nice a whole section divided for metrics (what, when, how, how match, how many) for at least Top5 metrics to valuate a domain...
I know it would be like "freecoaching"...but That was only a timid try :xf.wink:

Good question.

A few things to consider when looking to purchase a domain name would be:
  • What extension is it?
  • Are other the extensions taken?
  • If so, how many?
  • How many characters is it?
  • One word, 2 word, 3 word etc?
  • Whats the Search Volume?
  • Whats the search results in google (when you put it in quotes in the search engine)?
  • What are the past sales for related domains?
  • Is there anyone advertising for the keyword/keywords in the domain (high Comp, medium comp, low comp)?
  • Are their any other websites with longer versions of your domain name. Do you have a "superior version" of the name someone else would want? (I like ZFbot for this)
  • Am I listening to my gut?
Those are some I go through whenever I am going to purchase a name.

Hope that helps!

-Omar

My blog has an article explaining domain metrics, among other stuff, for beginners, if you are interested.

thanks for the replies guys - thought i better see how the people who know what they are doing went about it. just checked your site out thanks Steve - that article is really great and i like the site a lot too. will keep checking it out for updates in the future. thanks for your list too Omar - that is the sort of info i was after too.

Biggie - your response intrigues me even more to be honest. do you purely just go on your gut instinct? i guess as a beginner i just worry that i might like something but no-one else will & i'll be stuck with it. like for example, i picked up barjobsibiza.com before i read that long three word .coms aren't that valuable

Give our free tool a try. You type in the name of the domain, and it gives you potential sales leads for it based on various factors like having a similar domain, being in the same line of business, competing for the same keywords ect.

You will get a good overview of what your potential buyers- end users are. See my signature for the info.

Hi Paul

most purchases are based on gut feeling, but sometimes additional research is done.

but for newbies, they should spend more time reading actual experiences from other domainers, the past sales threads and domains wanted threads, first.

after reading in depth, you will find such statements like "three word .com's aren't valuable" are contradictions of what you're "read" somewhere before.

many will tell you one thing and do another, and most will point you to the same place where somebody else pointed them to.

feed yourself, don't be spoon fed to.

to your original question below, it depends on why you're thinking of buying it.

if buying to develop into viable website, then choose what you like

if you're buying to park and hope to earn revenue, then more research is needed.

if buying in hopes of reselling, then follow the "more reading" advice above first.
no cents (pun intended) in purchasing names, when you don't know what buyers are looking for, what they are willing to pay or what has been selling over the years and for how much.
