Hi,

I've seen a site available where you can pay a fee to monitor expiring domains names, (and a few free ones come to that) my questions are:

1) What are peoples experiences of these? Do you have any good reccomendations?

2) Are the paid versions any better than some of the free options out there?

3) I've seen sites that freely list domains that are already deleted or pending DELETE, however am i right in that if you catch this before the deletion period (eg backorder the domain) you stand a better chance of getting it as it wont be listed in public auctions, and rather, they are only auctioned privately between those who have backordered them?

Based on the above (if that statement is true) it would suggest that catching a domain earlier before it goes into delete gives you a better chance of winning it?

Am I correct? any help is much appreciated.

From what I have seen the paid sites generally give you more notice and show you stats like PR, links, and so on. If the domain is not really something popular, you can use the domain monitor from Domaintools.com and they will tell you when it drops, but someone may get it before you do. I would try it and see how it works for you or one of the other services. I have never used the paid services, since the fees are more than I want to pay for a domain. If it's a valuable domain, there will be many people trying to get it so I think you chances are slim, but it could happen.

I think the EXPIRED domains like at TDNAM can be bid upon and if you are the high bidder you should get it. But I don't think all expired domains can be bid on, that depends on the registrar that has the domain, like Godaddy for TDNAM. Once a domain has been DELETED or DROPPED, then the first one to it gets it. A domain that has been backordered and won could then be put up for auction, but I am not aware that happens a lot.
