DOMAIN HUMOR: Where did all the “good names” go?

So, we’ve heard whispers from some domain name investors that all the “good names” in the domain space were “taken years ago”. As in….

Unavailable?

Gone?

Depleted?

No crumbs to savor?

Needless to say, there are domain investors, both new and tenured, who allow this subjective view to sway their investor confidence. Let’s use this thread to calibrate via a little humor.

Now, all the “good names” couldn’t possibly be taken. If they were, that would mean registrars are farmers in collusion to sell hungry folks empty eggs. “Shell names” anyone?

Furthermore, where’s the formal list of so-called “good domains”? @bobhawkes, you wouldn’t have it tucked away somewhere would you? If a list did exist, Bob would have it!

Using the phrase “good domains” should be prefaced with “the names I believe are”. After all, what we consider “good sleep”, “a good meal” or even a “good therapist session” varies.

We know some folks use Jedi mind-tricks to psych other investors out as a way to make their own holdings, (which are probably names they consider “good”) seem more desirable.

All the “good names” being gone “years ago” implies the possibility of registering one now rests exclusively with blockchain names. Now, we know how many of you'd disagree.

So, let’s agree pairing “good names” with “all taken” is like using “quenched thirst” to define “no water”. Together, they can paint a very confusing picture of the facts.

They are gone dude. You either gotta pay up, look for other extensions, or get crafty in forging a good name variant. Every domain name is one-of-a-kind.

The old adage "early bird gets the worm" holds true especially in the DN industry. And that one's been gone since 1999. That bird was first out of the nest.

Early entrants made millions buying up the cream, but had to wait decades for their payday.
Newer entrants have had to get creative with their purchases and their sell through rates have probably been higher through sheer volume.

“Creative”. We love that word! This is something you don’t hear spoken about too often in the domain investing space. Creativity opens the door to possibility; while also redefining it as well.

Our belief is that “good names” rely on too much subjective consideration to have sustainable valuable on their own. Creative names allow you to define both the name and its value on your terms.

We shall see whether all the “good names” are gone or whether a crop of creative domain investors will pull back the cover on a treasure trove of names past investors didn’t realize existed.
