Hi guys,

I’m new to the domain world and wondered if anyone could assist. (It’s desperately needed!)

Since starting I’ve collected 20 odd domains and I’m having no luck with a resale.

When I first started I got names which I thought were good and desirable, for example:

Seizeeverything.com
Competitivelybetter.com
Faulty.me

After I conducted further research, I realised people prefer more “aged” domains and I procured:

Virus-updates.com
Sellingviaemail.com
Zunestuff.com

STILL NO SUCCESS!

With a little discontent, my next exploration seen me purchase high key worded domains:

Lordofring.com
Healthyandeating.com

Some of these are in the millions of average monthly searches with low competition. However, I still have no luck and many of these are on their second auction on a large registrar.

What am I doing wrong?? Help would be highly appreciated!

The mistake you've made is what most newbies tend to make, which is you did not try to learn the fundamentals behind domaining first.

So stop all operations immediately now and get back on the drawing board for at least another 6 months... becoming a good domainer is a gradual progress and cannot be achieved overnight. The more you read and study the more chance of your success, although knowledge alone cannot guarantee you success either.

I'm guessing by that post that I've started badly lol. No worries, returning to the drawing board seems the best idea!

As a genral rule, before you register a domain "ask yourself how can it be used?" If you can't find a real application for it then that domain won't be worth registering.

Now start applying this rule to your existing domains and see if you can really come up with something?

Please note: anything said below that may sound harsh is not meant to sound so, it is simply meant to give you some (hopefully) sound answers on where you have gone wrong.

When I first started I got names which I thought were good and desirable, for example:

Seizeeverything.com
Competitivelybetter.com
Faulty.me

Off to a bad start. Firstly, .me currently retains little value unless you have a keyword domain that closely relates to the extension. For example, Draw.me would be a great domain, as you can see clear application for a popular site. Faulty.me doesn't really lend itself to anything.

The other two are two word keyword .com's, which is fine. However, again, I see little to apply these domains to in terms of development and I can't see any end users (companies, other site owners with deep pockets) looking to pick them up as I can't envisage anyone wanting them.

After I conducted further research, I realised people prefer more “aged” domains and I procured:

Virus-updates.com
Sellingviaemail.com
Zunestuff.com

STILL NO SUCCESS!

This is a mistake many domainers make - indeed not just people new to domain. An aged domain is only ever relevant if it has previously been used and may have a hangover of traffic or the ability to quickly be listed on a search engine due to the fact it has a good number of backlinks.

Virus-updates has a hyphen which instantly lowers its value, Sellingviaemail is lengthy and again, I can't see many end users that would be interested in the domain and Zunestuff, again is limited to its application due to trademarks.

With a little discontent, my next exploration seen me purchase high key worded domains:

Lordofring.com
Healthyandeating.com

Some of these are in the millions of average monthly searches with low competition. However, I still have no luck and many of these are on their second auction on a large registrar.

I would suggest the monthly searches for 'Lord of Ring' will almost all be for 'Lord of the Rings'. You'd find it extremely difficult to rank for these keywords and unless you can do so, the domain itself holds no real value.

I like Healthy and Eating, it would make a great name for something like an anorexia commentary site, but again I can't see much value in the domain and even developed, it probably wouldn't hold much value - though there are automatically a few ideas bandying around in my head. The majority of searches for this will come from 'healthy eating' - I assume you are using Google Adwords Keyword Tool - be aware when you use it that you have to take the information with a pinch of salt. You'll probably find out that 'healthy and eating' as a phrase draws in a tiny, tiny proportion of the '823,000' searches it proposes are made.

Hope that gives some insight for you and best of luck!

not necessarily, but the aged domains often sell for high prices because they aged (hold and resold without drops) for the very reason that they are really good names.

There are also tons of aged names hold by the original registrants for 8+ years because for some reason it is valuable for them, which does not make it more valuable for anyone else.

Switch to exact match when researching and you likely won't be as impressed.

One tip would be to start picking names that you could actually imagine a site on if you were to develop it.

If you personally can't think of any use for a particular domain, then more than likely, neither can most others, meaning inquiries from end users will be few and far between.
