Domain hack standards?

Since http://del.icio.us/ made the domain hack popular (at least in my mind), I have never really considered names that don't follow the 3-letter.4-letter.2-letter pattern as valid/proper domain hacks.

That is only my opinion, of course, and most will likely consider it silly, but that's how I feel.
Something like http://lu.nchti.me/ is, in my mind, not a good domain hack. The proper way should be http://lun.chti.me/

By these standards, my best domain hack (though not in use) is http://ent.erta.in/
It could also be branched off into something like http://ent.erta.in/ment/ if I was feeling playful. :snaphappy:

Anyway, what are your domain hack standards?
Does anything go, regardless of how many letters are used/etc., or do you like to maintain a certain balance?

just the extension at the end makes a major hack name to my knowledge , others are called minor i think , to me as the name in my signature suggests , just the extension at the end of the name is best ?

I think you completely missed the point and question of my post.

i answered your question ......last time though , most hacks are only using the extension at the end , look at the hack threads and you will see, this is also my preference

my domain hack standards are the extension for example sneez.in & sneeze.in

I think that the best hacks are complete words including the extension (like inter.net) ... with 2+2 words (like ed.gy) usually being the most sought after in the category

hacks that are two words with the second word being the extension (like many .me hacks) can have some value but it would depend on the keywords and their combination

two-word hacks where the second word is hacked are not of very high value imo , though there are some that might be pretty good (and , of course , the usual "if developed it could worth millions" rule still applies)

three-word hacks where the third word is hacked are practically worthless

subdomain hacks (like del.icio.us) are again of not very high value imo ... letter arrangement does play a certain role , depending on the keyword (eg. some 2+2+2 might look better than an 1+3+2 , while in other keywords it might be the other way around) ... I think they need tons of promotion or very good development to be popular ... moreover there are usually unregistered variations with adding or deleting a letter in the second level domain (like de.licio.us instead of del.icio.us) which can drive their value down

That's the kind of response I was looking for. Thanks, Earthian. :tu:

The best domain hack is the one you can understand easily, and remember.

http://lu.nchti.me/ < Straight away it catches my eye; "Lunch time!".
http://lun.chti.me/ < It doesn't get me, because the center is short, but the longest, the eye is drawn to it and makes it focus, so I see "chti" and have to think about what it is, where as the top one I'm not forced to focus on anything, I can see the full word.

I agree....

For me, the short, sharp, memorable 2 letters + extension are the most powerful, by far:

eg ma.am

I agree with that.

As far as the subdomains go and whether 3+4+2 or whatever is best, I think it depends on the words and how they look with the dots. If possible, I'd prefer to see the dots between the syllables (unless the word is really long, obviously).

Of course, I think it depends on the hack.

I also think the dots separating words is good, too. For instance, I have scammed.me (and if I ever get to coding it, I'll have user-created subdomains - for instance Godaddy.Scammed.me). I also have Neuter.me.

Otherwise, I like hacks that look good and can be remembered easily. The only other hack I have is CyberNe.ws, although I don't think Cyb.erNe.ws would be too horrible, I prefer the look of CyberNe.ws. I think the best hack would Cyber.Ne.ws, though because you could also have Sports.Ne.ws and Stocks.Ne.ws, etc...
