Domain from 1990 in private NameJet auction

NewBridge.com may not seem like an extraordinary domain -- that is, until you check its whois listing.

The domain has been continuously registered since Nov. 2nd, 1990, making the name more than 18 years old. It also boasts a pair of DMOZ listings and carries an Alexa rank of roughly 5.6 million.

And it's in private auction on NameJet now with roughly 2 hours to go. 97 domain investors are duking it out over this rare novelty domain, which they've already bid up to $3700.

NewBridge.com was formally owned by NewBridge Networks Corporation, a provider of real-time audio and communications solutions.

NewBridge.com was among the first few thousand domain names ever registered. The string "NewBridge" has since been registered in virtually all gTLDs and a handful of ccTLDs.

If the top bidders for the domain are identifiable NP members and you've got aged domains, therein lies opportunity for sales and partnerships.

True, though this is the oldest one I've seen thus far. SoftDesk.com (from 1992) sold for $1500 a few days ago, and ACMI.com (1993) clocked in around $1200 last month.

Pretty cool stuff. I guess it statistically makes sense that half-dozen or so 1980s domains drop per year.

I'm impressed for whoever managed to pick up ChipCom.com for a mere $1290 (perhaps b/c the DRT didn't exists back in April, but I could be wrong). Good eye.
