... does such thing exist? Scenario: a taster just cancels and refunds a name, service detects this and sends you a text message to your mobile phone, message includes GoDaddy's phone number, you call them up and register the name...

yes, if you have a dedicated internet connection such as cable or DSL

I'm still small-time though... The cheapest eNom API account looks like it costs $195 to setup, then $10.45 per domain reg'd with that API. Too expensive for me when there are decent two-word names (even zip codes!) being dropped by first-tasters and not too much competition - only 5min-1hr window until the next taster... plenty of time to act by calling up GoDaddy or reg'ing at my desk...

What you can do to automatically grab a name when the taster is done with it is place a backorder at gd. It costs just $18 and often works in that case.
