Domain Drop Confusion

I recently found a domain that was dropping yesterday so I did the normal search at Snapnames, Pool, and ClubDrop to acquire it. The only one that had it listed was pool so I backordered through their service. Today I checked it and it had not been caught by Pool but instead was already registered in the WHOIS to a new owner with a brand new registration. The registrar looks tied to GoDaddy, perhaps a reseller. And to make matters worse, I had a second domain I was looking at and it ended up in the same hands as the first one! What am I missing? How did this happen? Please help so I can get some sleep tonight!

Backordering the domain name does not guarantee the acquisition of that domain name.

All backordering companies try to reg the domain name at the moment the domain drops from the registry. Remember, there will be a grace period of 12 days before the actual drop of the domain name, at that time, the owner of the name can renew the domain name again.

Right you are, however, am I correct in thinking that the WHOIS record would show the very first date it was registered if it indeed was renewed? For instance, wrx.com was in the redemption period but was renewed and it shows the reg date as 1995. The records also show the date of registration to be at 7:00pm the day the domain had expired so that leads me to believe he acquired both of the domains through someone outside of the big 3 drop catchers but that would be incredibly rare IMHO.

I can't imagine how the WHOIS record would change, unless the owner managed to renew and transfer it to another account within that one day. Its clear that if Pool, Snap and Club didn't catch it, then either the owner renewd, or some third party caught it (how, I have no idea)
