During the rare occasions I have explained domaining to some friends or family, the reactions I get are mixed, but in most cases, it is hard for them to fully understand why domain names can have so much value.

Sometimes domain investors take it for granted that everyone knows what a domain name is and how it works, but the reality is a huge number of people (probably most people) have no idea of how this work. Is that your experience?

Whenever I tell my friends and family about domain investing,I get looked at like I have a penis sticking out of my forehead. It happens all the time.

Most of my friends and family can't fully comprehend it but my girlfriend understands the business completely. It's quite remarkable.

Interesting thread...and agree most don't have a clue. But to be honest it's hard to explain to someone outside the spectrum looking in...moreso if they're not very internet savy. Quite surprised as well that even some of the more in depth tech oriented ones don't get it either....guess it comes with the "addiction" aspect of it all, because let's be real...that's what it becomes. Hard to describe a passion to someone regardless.

You should see a dermatologist about that:)

My wife doesn't ask too much about it. The hard part was explaining why so many of my names would get pennies if we had to sell them tomorrow. And that a number of them would never sell. She does understand that one sale out of 100 domains can pay for the 99 domains that don't sell. And that I don't know which ones of those will sell.

This reminds me that I should give her a list of the names to definitely hang onto if something should happen to me. (Right after I've explained to her how to access my bitcoins. Sheesh.)

I don't talk about domains with anyone except domainers. Like ExpireGuy says, even the tech savvy friends don't really get it. Most people are satisfied when I just say "I do stuff on the internet."

My cousin looked at me like wtf as she didn't get it. My mom completely understands now as everytime I turn $8-$50 into x,xxx-xx,xxx she usually gets a nice gift.

Had an ex-gf who was a stellar brick'n mortar business woman, but had no clue how to facilitate her online presence. She spent thousands via print, radio etc..put out flyers with her new business domain (hyphenated!?!?!)...almost crapped myself when she told me. Told her I could help her out by regging keywords of her local biz for Search optomization...cost literally 70 bucks ($7 using the GD codes LOL) and since her biz was named after her Keyword(Name)-salon.com (barf)..I told her I could actually get her first name dot com (Her first name was quite unique) for around $500...but of course she didn't want to hear of it...had no clue....FYI - Never hook up with Blonde Vegan Hairstylists...their a domainers Kryptonite...their the bomb dot com, but 'll end up dropping ya off a cliff quicker than a Godaddy account push...minus an email confirmation of course...B-)

If you add "Sane" to the list and I get your first name...I'll put the engagement ring on lay away and start taking my meds again...:D

If everyone knew of this business, there would be a lot more competition ..

I just tell them the similarity with real estate (that domains are virtual real estate) and that either makes them get it or they just say that they get it. If they have more questions I am happy to explain, if not then also ok :)

I stopped trying to explain domaining to them. My inlaws would never have the patience to learn what I know, their eyes would glaze over five minutes in.

I don't even bother anymore.

Yes, I have used the real estate analogy too. Everybody knows the basics of real estate, so the comparison helps and it is mostly accurate, although there are some aspects of domaining that clearly difer from it, such as the uncertainty of pricing and value.

Its much the same with AdSense income. What do you sell? Nothing. How do you make money... Then watch their eyes glaze over when you try to explain.
