Personally (generally speaking) I would pay more for both.

If you can afford it, it never hurts to have both...A few reasons why::

1) If its a domain that you plan on developing yourself with long term goals behind it...It's going to be important to protect your brand. If this is the case and your site really does become big..heck with just the .com and .net...Do what most companies do and buy every single one there is out there! It's important to protect your websites brand.

2) If you plan on selling it to an end user there is a good chance if they want one, they will want the other as well. Someone isn't going to pay you hundreds (or thousands) of dollars for the .COM only to know you still own the .NET

Personally, if you don't plan on doing one of the two above then there really isn't any need to own both extensions. If you plan on buying XXXX.com and putting some auto blog on there or something - then there isn't any point in owning both extensions of the domain.

Depending on the term/acronym, it may be advantageous to own the .org as well, which seems to offer a patina of trustworthiness (Albeit misplaced, I think. But the perception is there).

If you are going to do a major development of the .com, I would reg in all major extensions, but only as a defensive move.
