Hi everyone,

Does wix have any effect over SEO, when building a website on their platform? For good/ for bad..
Feel free to detail.

Thanks!

According to G, it makes no difference to use a CMS or an other to rank a site (but often, G is not really trustful)

In the case of wix.com, the site is in good standing with G: 18 million pages are indexed on one side, and a wix page is in the top 20 for 67000 keywords, which is not bad at all

see www semrush com /info/wix.com?db=us for details

Furthermore, the organic traffic of wix.com has continuously increased since launching.

I don't know much about wix, but clearly, they must be very careful to avoid being hurt by G.

Are you trying to decide whether to use Wix or another platform, probably a free one? There are better ones.

Some Wix pages seem to use Flash so some or all of that Flash content is invisible to search engines, not good for SEO.

Thank you for the detailing, great perspective!

Mhmm.. I started with Wix but I am open to hear of better platforms :)

Thanks!

You can use Wordpress.com with your own domain for $12 but have a limited choice of themes unless you pay a bit more. But you can export it all into a full-featured self-hosted Wordpress at any time. Easy, good for SEO.

Weebly is not great but probably better than Wix - you can add Google Analytics and create themes. I don't think Weebly or Wix let you export your stuff, and their business model is based on charging progressive fees for features you would not pay for if you used your own hosting. One one of these I found someone being asked to pay $40 a year to use a domain.

I was trying to answer your exact question, but other comments make sense. You should not plan to develop a site based on wix (nor weebly nor most alternatives) if you plan to sell your site in a foreseeable future: it would devalue your domain. Even blogger is very questionable. Wordpress is by far the best option (even if, like me, you don't like it). I personally would not use wordpress.com because they have bizarre policies. Better chose a hosting company you have control on.

The site is a hand crafted jewelry marketplace (ecommerce), meaning I am not planning on selling it. Does it change your opinion?
I want to avoid any use of wordpress because of the lack of knowledge and the costs it can reach.

Thanks for everyone's advices!

Let me emphasize a few points:

a) I don't know much about wix, but I see no reason to believe wix is penalized by G

b) I do not recommend any free web because you do not control it fully. That's a strategic decision. Many of these systems have disappeared over time, and the future of wix is not guaranteed. Nor is it guaranteed they will not change their policies in a way that no longer fits your needs. If I were obliged to choose a free web system, I'd personally choose blogger which is more likely to survive. No misunderstanding: blogger is far from being perfect, and it is also a proprietary system with all the risks involved.

c) Even though I don't like it at all, I use wordpress. If you make this choice, be extra careful with plugins. Many are poorly written and will disappear.

Just for you to understand where I come from, I have had my own proprietary CMS for 10 years. Of course I found it considerably better than other CMSs :), but I am abandoning it because of maintenance.

Wordpress is free.

Probably easier to use than Wix, with answers on the web to most questions.

But your original question is about whether Wix is ok for SEO, which means comparing it to other systems.

But to answer the SEO question specifically for your site we'd need to know more and know what you want to achieve. One thing to bear in mind is what "theme" or template is in use and whether it has been edited. I saw a Weebly site where the theme was so badly done that it prevented search engines from indexing all the pages except the home page and the about page.

What control does Wix give over seo-relevant features?

What can a site ask for? As much exposure it can get. Doesn't it?

And if the business blossom in the past time I might consider to build my own website (by hiring a professional perhaps).

But in the meantime i'd like to have a strong, trustful website, that could handle increasing traffic.

So wordpress would be a better choice?

BTW I found a nice template that works pretty good, and looks professional as well.

Good point about the systems ״life expectancy".
I am willing to pay extra cash on a more reliable platform.

Just for general knowledge - do you seperate Wordpress from the other platforms? For example blogger equals to Windows Paint while Wordpress is, say, Photoshop?

Where would you recommend me to start learning Wordpress?

Thanks for your help!

IMHO, wordpress is not any better than other CMS, but for some reasons, people adore it. As a consequence, it has become a de facto standard. For the foreseeable future, it will remain a standard. 10 years from now, it may be replaced by something else.

To learn wordpress, search google. There are zillions of free tutorials.
