Do you think .com names are too cheap?

Do you think the market is where it should be for most .com names or do you think that the prices should be much more?

A .com name that is good enough to be a real web site, meaning it is a name that is good enough for someone or company to develop it and expect profits, what do you think a minimum value should be? Do you think prices reflect to future values and profits?

Supply and demand have set current prices, so they by definition are correct. A system where aftermarket domains were more accessable to end users would cause a stiff increase in prices for domains favored by those end users - with a strong bias toward the types of domains that the new system presents well. (Short acronym domains could rise or fall depending on the mechanics of the system, and if the system provides acronymn domains as relevant search results.)

A lot of people here (including me) think domains are greatly undervalued considering the potential growth of the internet and comparable values in the business real estate market. However the risk in predicting something as quick to change as the internet is also very great.

True. I think that domains are undervalued given the calculated development potential, and the growth rate in the future for those domains.

I agree with the general comments made here.

If only I could hold on to all my .COM names... but a domainer has to make a buck somehow!

thanks to your comment and Verisign is increasing its .com and .net pricing 1st Oct. 2008 after a similar price increase last Oct. Look like Verisigin will increase its price very year from on now.

well I dont think there is any point in .com increasing their prices, all the good domains are taken anyway, or most of them.... .com I think also sells more which is also the reason why they can afford to keep it at that price.

Look at the extensions that charge more. Domainers, for the most part, tend to stay away, leaving businesses and people that will actually use the names to register them. It's too late now, but generic TLDs should cost just under 100 USD for open registrations.

:imho: If it were up to me, I'd keep registrations free for non-commercial websites after those potential domain owners submit an application describing the legitimate usage of the domain. Alongside that, I'd charge a hefty fee for commercial businesses and also people who would like to own a domain without filling out an application or without a defined use for the domain at the present time (your average domainer). Not completely foolproof and flawless, but it's a start. :red:

After all the criticism about Verisign's pricing I think they do a good job for what they are paid for. At the end of the day a big part of the security of the internet rests with them. (A heavy burden that I certainly don't want to carry.)
