Do Iframes Hurt Search Engine Rankings?

Hi all,

I have a website where I need to use Iframe tags for a banner rotation system. These tags allow me to put the banner system on both html and php pages. The banner will be on my site and there will be no content from other sites like RSS etc. Will using Iframe tags this way hurt my site in search engine rankings if my content was the same as before? Thanks for any help I can get on this.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Frames hurts the rankings. :(

It can be said that the content in frames is not crawlable by the search engines.

EX: Some people also say that flash file is not good for SEO.
But if you have flash ads and the real content on the page is still in HTML and crawlable then it is not hurting. It is just that the content in the flash file is not visible to bots.

So basically anything in the frames is not crawlable but the tags shouldnt hurt my overall rankings right?

throw noindex tags around the iframe tags ;)

I think we should make a list of the things that hurt and that doesn't helps.

Sometimes there is a confusion between Hurting and Not-Helping.

Thanks.

So putting noindex tags around the iframes would help the search engines not spider one page instead of two due to the iframes?

Also, would it be better to use javascript instead of the iframe tags for the banner rotation system or would that make any real difference?

Think I will just try a different script rather than risk it :). Thanks for the help.
