Honest opinion or validation When it comes to opinions, some people care about everyone's opinion, others only care about the opinions of those that are more successful and others don't give a damn what anyone thinks on a certain topic. When the topic of domain appraisals comes up, things can get spicy and sometimes nasty. I have always believed many just want validation, not an honest … [Read more...]

The problem with the domain name industry

And there are many

One of which is that it has no infrastructure

There are that many leaks in the domain name industry bucket that water is leaking out the bucket that it cant retain any water so to speak

People new to the domain name industry will hear stories of huge multi million dollar sales etc and by simply asking google what the most expensive domains sold are will give the investor a list of the multimillion dollar sales etc etc

Any new domain name investor entering the domain name industry will quite quickly learn who the seasoned early domain name investors are that pre registered multi million dolkar domains for free when that was possible pre 1995 etc

But domain investors starting out in the domain name industry in 2020 that can only spend the odd £10 as and when they can afford it etc will only be able to buy a domain that costs £10 in 2020 which may be a gtld etc or a two keyword .com if they are lucky etc

I would say the biggest problem in the domain name industry is that domain names are digital assets and the industry doesnt have a digital assets liquidation team

That said neither to banks and not even pawnbrokers lend against domain names

Too many new domain name investors have domain names theyve spent money on that have value and or no value and have lost money because of investing in domains

Most domainers cant sell for toffee just like me lol ive been taught to sell professionally bur have no interest in selling etc but there are no means for a person liqidate their domain name assets without paying a good few quid in commission to market places etc

Basically

The domain name industry has

Domain name valuation websites that value domain names that not even the companies that produce those valuations will liquidate that domain name for etc

Its a bit like getting a valuation on a car or house etc

If a car or property auction gives you a valuation of your car or house etc there is avery good likelyhood that that car or house will sell for approx that price when it goes to auction etc

But domain name valuations?

Most are best worthless and the rest are worth less than a cup of tea

And i could write a book about the problems with the domain name industry

Which has bwen about for 2tyears and it still doesnt offer a domain name investor the option of donain name insurance which is as best laughable and at worst incompetence at best

The domain name industry is fast becoming like mlm where many people in the uk were left with products they could not sell because those at the top had the biggest discounts etc and people lost money everywhere with mlm in the uk so the uk banned mlm

New donain investors are losing money on their investments because they cant sell them and at sone point the uk will solve that problem and bring in the digital infrastructure and accurate valuations and domain name ibsurance and instant liquidity services thw domain name industry needs andhas nedded for decades

It's really no different from the self appraisal sites in any industry - for that matter the "salary" guides for every job in the world.

They are always less than accurate - the prob in domaining (IMO) is that unlike handing a Zillow estimate to a Real Estate agent and telling them you take this Zestimate as the rule and thats what it's worth .... Domain lottery ticket holders end up here in our domain appraisal or sales section..... the real estate agent tells them to ****off.

Calculators are not the problem

NP should make Jim h to be the Moderator in the appraisal section since he just pulled out a number from his hat and made most of the members happy.

From looking at his names with his feedback profile we can see he is qualified for this job. Also he is a fearless person (an important factor if you want to be a Mod) and just do what he did regardless of other member's comments.

For the educated domainer a valuation means nothing, he or she will decide it's value.

For the a buyer that knows nothing about domaining some of the valuable parts of a keyword based domain appraisal (if it has one) is:

Dot com or not (pros of dot com)
How many other extensions is the word taken in
How many domains have this word in it
How many broad and exact search a month for the keyword
How much is the CPC for the KW
History of the domain both age and what was it used for in the past if anything
Domain sales history
Trademark info

For brandable names without much meaning obviously that is more subjective
