Hi,

I have the following experience so far regarding DNS update.

1. When I change DNS of a domain for the time being it continues to point to existing site
2. After some time, website stops showing i.e. downtime. It neither shows old nor new site.
3. Then after around 24 hours (after DNS propagation) new site starts to show up.

But a person told me just now that when you update DNS then no downtime occurs at all. That is step 2 I described above doesn't happen. When you update DNS, old website continue to show up and as soon as DNS propagation is complete then new site shows up, without any downtime. Is this true?

Thanks

Generally this shouldn't happen but also depends on your registrar too.

What shouldn't happen? Downtime or no downtime?

downtime should not happen when you change dns. Propagation can take some time to fully update through all the zones, but even during propagation what should happen is that your domain resolves based upon either the old record or the new one.

Keep in mind that some Registries update their zonefile every 12 hours. Though this is not the case for Verisign ;) NIC.ES however.......

I guess you are referring to the point that sometimes it may take longer for DNS propagation but that's not a problem.
What I want to know is if a downtime is possible during DNS update?

You must set your domain on 'new hosting' before you change nameservers. And this must happen 24 h before. :imho:
