The opinions expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I was happy when Google finally shut down public PageRank and the same goes for DMOZ. They were outdated/useless statistics/qualifiers that domainers kept using long after their utility expired. This will help newcomers stop falling for them and buying domains based on them. (y)

I care and I bet millions of other people care too. Not sure if you really know what DMOZ used to be and how important it was back in the day. I also used to be an editor of two small-ish categories for a while, so yes I care!

I not only know what DMOZ.org was, but was an editor since 2004 for several categories related to webdevelopment and electronics

You were a disenfranchised volunteer? Your input would be interesting to state why you feel that way. I felt DMOZ had some credibility based on its history from years back, perhaps it got corrupt or politicized?
    Thanks for being a volunteer.

Yup. R.I.P. It was a useful service (and still would be) if it had not been so incompetently managed. IMHO. Quick turnaround of applications by non-biased editors (no accusations being thrown at you @barefoottech) and it would still be a very useful service today.. There were also too many fiefdoms laying waste to whole swaths of DMOZ. This is what happens when a large profit making institution, mismanages one of it's free useful services, who then decide to cut costs because the service is no longer satisfying expectations and generating too many complaints. Go to DMOZ's Wikipedia page. It's a litany of how not to run this kind of operation. Shame on you AOL.

To see how a good model works. Just look at MicroFocus's ownership of openSUSE. From openSuSE's Wikipedia page...

Different businesses, with different outcomes. From the same core problem. with a few changes of ownership on the way SUSE>Novell>Attachmate>MicroFocus.

R.I.P (1998-2017) DMOZ. From a great promise to a complete failure to provide a useful service.

    DMOZ!?!?!?! LOL...

I remember submitting my employer's website to DMOZ back in late '00 and then waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And...

Months later (16???) I somehow managed to connect with a very cool DMOZ editor on a completely unrelated board. He said he'd put in a good word for my submission and gave me some tips on future submissions.Fast forward a few weeks and my company's site submission was finally listed. With the help of some additional SE tweaks we quickly shot to the top of Google in our niche.

    Aaaahhhh, good times....
