Display ads VS Search ads

Which provides a better ROI generally? I have been using mostly just search ppc ads and am just starting to setup some display ads with my banners and creatives. In your experience which of these ppc methods provides a better return on investment?

What are you trying to accomplish? Display is more for branding or impulse purchases, search is more for direct response but can benefit branding too. If your goal is an immediate sale, search is usually more effective (unless you have a product where you need to build awareness first), but all campaigns are different
