What is the best way to find out direct navigation traffic or Type in traffic for a domain name I want to buy. A friend of mine uses an estimate of about 30% of the google adwords monthly traffic but want to see if you guys have other methods. The cheaper the better of course.

Thanks!

In my opinion direct navigation is a dying breed. The modern browsers are killing this and so is the switch from desktop computers to people using smart phones to search for services and products. But it's not dead yet. I have seen traffic decline over the pass ten years on some of my names. Those where the good old days where you could actually make some nice money on parked domain names.

But back to your question. If I knew how to get direct navigation domain names, you think I'm gonna tell you :)

There are formulas and avenues to cease opportunities, but nothing is guaranteed.

Research, Read a lot and cease opportunities...

if you register 10 names and 9 are duds, you are doing good, provided that one domain makes you a dollar a day.

best way to find out is:

go back in time and use overture tool

buy or start a ppc service, then you'll know which names get type-in traffic

buy domains from other owners who will provide you with stats of traffic

imo....

I think estibot still has the overture historical figures, but this is only any use for pretty generic terms that are not dependant on any sort of fashion (technology, social media etc.)

I tend to use exact match searches as a guide but only in relative terms. Length and number of words greatly effect this too. In my very limited experience, I've had domains ranging from 0.5% - 18% (mainly around 1% or less) of search volume as type-in on 2 word domains so I'd say 30% is pretty high but I'm sure there many others around here with better knowledge of this.

exact match is not exact, because tooooooooo many domainers use it to query the same keywords over and over and over and over and over...plus 1, for each 'new' newbie wanna be a domainer too, that comes along.

:)
