Let's say for argument's sake I have a domain that I would like to test the waters on in a Godaddy auction.

Can anyone recommend the best way, if there is a way, to see what a domain might bring without actually giving it up?

I am searching the site for answers but thought to post the question here too. This is a very informative site, having just discovered it this eve.

No, not really... The truth is the value is what someone is wiling to pay at the time.... Just because a name draws a certain value today, does not guarantee that same value tomorrow.

I think appraisals may be of value in most markets.. But they are worthless in domaining.

Your best bet is to just get the opinions of 2 or 3 people you respect in the business and keep in mind that they are only giving you an educated guess

There isn't really a way of putting it into auction without actually having to sell unless you set a reserve, and that reserve isn't met. You can do what some idiots do out there and let it expire, see if it gets any action in the GoDaddy auctions, and then renew it before it's too late - But this is usually frowned upon in our industry. It's not right to put it out there and let people bid on it with the sole intention of really holding onto it. My advice would be to list it on a site where you can set a reserve (Flippa, for example)...let everyone make their bids and if it meets your desired price you know you got what you wanted for it. Otherwise, at least you can see how high the bidding gets :)
